Rookie Detective

Chapter 9

"Don't forget on Friday I'm hosting a picnic! I want you to invite everyone! Including that Amelia girl since we didn't get to have dinner that day." Carolina says putting breakfast on the table.

"I suppose I could ask her father for their home contact so I can ask her to come. But I'll probably see her around somewhere soon like always." I say eating

"Hmm well you have 2 days so ask before then." Carolina says

I finish breakfast and head to the station. I see Harry waiting at my desk.

"Good you're here let's go" Harry says

"Where are we going?" I ask

"We got a call from Scotland Yard and they said that George Lusk received a letter as well as a small box containing half a human kidney. Inspector Frederick Abberline is requesting our presence. Detective Reid must have told him about you." Harry says

"Inspector Abberline requested us that's great! But Half a human kidney... Catherine Eddowes had her kidney removed on the night of the double murder. Why half?" I say

"There's much to discuss but not here let's go" Harry says. So we head to Scotland Yard to meet Inspector Frederick Abberline.

"It's nice to meet you two I'm Frederick Abberline. So here it is." He says putting a tiny box I front of us. I open it and it is definitely half a human kidney.  Harry and I cringe.

"It was delivered to George Lusk the other day along with a letter. Mr Lusk thought it was just a prank since he receives letters a lot so he didn't tell us immediately even though he should have." Inspector Abberline said handing me the letter. "He gave the kidney to Dr. Thomas Openshaw to be analyzed."

"What did he conclude?" Harry asked

"He said the kidney was preserved in alcohol and is confirmed to be a human kidney from a woman who had died within the past 3 weeks. He also concluded that it belonged to a woman about 45 years of age suffering from Brights disease." He says

"Brights Disease?" Harry asks

"Kidney disease caused by heavy drinking. Catherine Eddowes was known to be a heavy drinker. And Catherine was 46 years of age at the time of her death." I say

"Correct however fellow doctors believes that it could just be a prank done by some medical students who could have got the organ from a corpse." Inspector Abberline says

"That's a theory" I say . I open the letter  Inspector Abberline gave me and it read : "From hell Mr Lusk, sor I took from one women prasarved it for you tother piece I fried and ate it was very nise. I may send you the bloody knif that took it out if you only wate a whil longer signed , Catch me when you can Mishter Lusk.". It's postmarked October 15 1888. It's October 18 1888.

"He didn't sign it with 'Jack the ripper' this time." I say

"Ah his literacy is getting worse and fried and ate the other half of the kidney? There's no way! He'd have to be a psycho to do that!" Harry says

"He is killing prostitutes I don't think that's too much of a stretch." Inspector Abberline says

"Could this be his way of throwing us off? Making us think that he's of lower class because of the way he writes? Or a hoax by a educated person?" I ask

"That could be true." Frederick Abberline says

"Who is this George Lusk Anyway? Why was it sent straight to him instead of the police?" I ask

"George Lusk is a part of the WhiteChapel Vigilance Committee. In fact he's their leader." Abberline says

"Perhaps sending it directly to him means the writer has some sort of animosity towards the committee. Or it could be a challenge..."I say "do you think it's legitimate? Or just another hoax?"

"Do you think it's legitimate?" He says tossing the question back at me.

"Yes , I do." I say

"Styles?" Abberline asks

"I do too." Harry says

"Great we're on the same page." Frederick said smiling. "Now let's go investigate. We have a lead."

We get into a carriage and head to who knows where since inspector Abberline said we'll find out when we get there. We get out of the carriage and appear in front of a shop on mile end road.

"What is this place?" Harry asks

"Let's go in" inspector Abberline says. We go inside and a lady walks up to us. "Miss Marsh it's inspector Abberline we spoke on the telephone. This is Louis Tomlinson and Harry styles my fellow Inspectors."

"Hello I'm Emily Marsh" She says doing a curtesy and we nod to her.

"Shall we discuss everything?" Inspector Abberline says.

"Of course please sit I'll make us some tea" she says

She puts out the plates and cups on the table and pours us some tea along with some Lemon pie. We all get our notepads our ready to take notes on this interview. I see Harry writing something already. It's says: "Emily Marsh shows hospitality by giving us delicious lemon pie."

"Is that necessary Harry?" I ask pointing to his notepad. I took a bite of the pie. He wasn't wrong it is delicious.

"Of course" He said eating the lemon pie. "This is great pie" He says to Emily

"Yes it's very good thank you" I say

"You're welcome" She says

"Shall we get started?" Inspector Abberline says sipping his tea.

"A man visited my shop days ago. He was very odd. His speech was weird and he looked strange as well. He asked me for the address of Mr Lusk so I gave it to him. He wrote it in a notebook then abruptly left. He was slim about six feet tall." She says

"Do you know what he was wearing?" I ask writing everything down

"I recall that he was wearing a long black overcoat. He had a beard and a mustache and spoke with an Irish accent." She says

I automatically think of Niall , Amelia's friend who's Irish and lives in Whitechapel. But he doesn't have any facial hair and didn't look any taller then five foot nine inches.

"When did this happen?" I ask

"It occurred on the 15th." She says

"I see.. is that all?" Inspector Abberline asks

"Yes" She says

"Thank you so much. We'll be going now then." He says. We leave the shop and enter the carriage. "We'll take you boys home. So What do you gentlemen think?"

"An Irish man... There are a lot of immigrants from Ireland in Whitechapel." Harry says

"I have someone in mind but I need to look into it more." Inspector Abberline said "I'll let you boys know."
