TOMMY'S POV:
The next day is stormy and gray. I look out my window. Rain is pouring down. Lightning is flashing in the distance. I hate days like this.
I blunder downstairs. My mom and sister aren't awake yet. That's odd, they usually wake up before I do. They must not be feeling well. I shrug to myself and start breakfast- toast with peanut butter.
Then, Bryne comes downstairs, and I notice something weird about her. She's washed out all of the dye in her hair. It used to be a neon purple at the top, with light blue at the edges. But now it's just regular brown.
Her choice of outfit is different, too. She always wore black leggings and a black sweatshirt, and she said she liked it because it made her hair stand out. But today, she's wearing a light blue t-shirt, a dark blue skirt (which shocks me because Bryne HATES wearing skirts) white kneesocks, and black dress shoes, AND she's wearing a dark blue bow.
And this is the weirdest part- she's wearing sunglasses. Inside. On a rainy day.
"Good morning, Game- uh, Tommy!" Bryne says cheerily.
Did she almost call me Gameknight?
"Hi, Bryne," I say. "Uh... your choice of outfit is interesting."
"I thought I should try something new," she says. "I've been wearing that for a while. I thought it was time to change things up a bit."
Huh. "So, are you ready for school today?"
"School?" Bryne looks surprised. "Oh! School! Right. Uhh... yeah, I suppose I am."
"Did you forget we had school today?" I ask, raising an eyebrow at her.
"Yeah, actually," Bryne says. She adjusts her sunglasses.
Which reminds me...
"Bryne? Why are you wearing sunglasses? It's not even sunny out."
"Ohh... umm... I just felt like it," she says, turning away from me. "I think I'm gonna keep these on for a while longer."
Okay...
Bryne walks, grabs her backpack off the hook on the door, and walks right out. But then, she peeks her head back in and says, "oh, by the way, don't expect to see your mom and sister."
And she turns and slams the door.
I sit down at the lunch table with Isabella. She's dyed the tips of her hair a beautiful neon purple, similar to the color of Bryne's old hair. Speaking of Bryne, instead of sitting with me, she's sitting alone at the back of the lunchroom by the wall.
Isabella takes a bite of her sandwich and says, "so why isn't Bryne sitting with you today? And what's with her outfit?"
"Those are two very good questions," I answer, "both of which I don't know the answer to. Earlier today, she almost called me by my Minecraft username, Gameknight. And, she also said to not expect to see my mom and Jenny today."
"Well, let's think about this," says Isabella. "Who do we know that calls the two of you by your Minecraft usernames?"
We both sit there, staring at each other, for about a whole minute until we both say it.
"Herobrine."
"But that's impossible," I say right off. "Herobrine is dead. You saw him die."
"I did," Isabella says. "There's no way... unless..."
"Unless what?"
"Unless he became a ghost. I know that can happen sometimes. But ghosts aren't permitted by the laws of nature to interact with humans in any way. All they can do is float around. You can't even see them. Unless he bypassed that rule, which is really unlikely..."
"Okay," I say. "Let's suppose Herobrine was a ghost and he interacted with Bryne. How could this lead to her acting like this?"
Isabella thinks for a moment, then says, "I actually have no idea. He can't be controlling her. That's literally impossible unless he hypnotized her, and I've read a lot on hypnosis, and one very reliable website says that a victim of hypnosis will not actually do anything that they are being forced by another person to do. In other words, they won't do anything against their will. So he can't be fully controlling her. Maybe she really just is being different because she wants to."
I look over at Bryne who I know is staring at me even though she's wearing sunglasses.
"Are you sure?" I ask. "What about the part with my mom and sister? Is something going to happen to them? I've already lost my father. They're the only living relatives I have left. If I lose them, there will be nobody left in my family except for me, since my parents will both be dead, I don't have any aunts or uncles, and my grandparents and everyone older than them are dead. And Jenny is my little sister. So I'll completely be alone. And if that is going to happen, how does Bryne know that it might? None of this makes any sense!"
I stomp my foot angrily on the floor.
"I know," Isabella says. "I know. Things can be confusing. But we can't control what happens to us. We can, however, control how we react to what happens to us. I don't take things sitting down, Tommy, and neither should you. You need to figure this out. I'll help you with whatever you need."
I hug her. "Thank you, Isabella," I say. "You are the most helpful person I've ever met in my entire life, and I've met a lot of helpful people."
"Anytime," Isabella replies. "Now, come on. We have to go back to class. I'll come home with you today and we can work together to figure this out."
I nod and she takes off in one direction while I go to the other.
Isabella is actually already at my house by the time I get home. She's trying to shield her hair from the rain.
"Oh, geez, I'm so sorry!" I say, pulling her through the door. "Was anyone home?"
"Yeah, all three of your family were, but when I knocked, nobody answered."
"I'm sorry for leaving you out in the rain like this," I say. "The bus was late. I wanted to call you and let you know that I'd be home late, but the service on the bus is terrible, especially today, considering the weather."
"It's okay," Isabella says. She shuts the door behind herself. "Hey, where's Bryne?"
"I dunno. BRYNE!" I yell through the house. "I'M HOME! WHERE ARE YOU?"
After maybe five seconds, Bryne comes racing downstairs (I'm surprised she can run in those shoes). Her face is bright red, and she has tears streaming down her face under her sunglasses.
"Tommy!" she sobs. "You w-won't believe what I s-saw in your m-mom's room!"
I look up, fear in my eyes. "What did you see," I ask, my voice quivering with fear.
"Jenny and your mom are DEAD!"

Hello, you guys! So, what do you think of the sequel so far?
I just wanted to warn you guys- there's going to be a lot of violence in the later chapters of this book, so if you're queasy about stuff like that, you may want to lay off this book. Just saying.
And sorry about the terrible foreshadowing I did in this chapter, along with the fact that the cover gave away the entire book. It was really hard to come up with a cover for this book, considering the fact that I CAN'T DRAW.
Hope you like the rest of the story!
