They wait until after the museum closes and Sherlock walks over to the woman. Ava and John join him soon after and Ava sits listening to the girl's story.
"You knew him quite well in China?" John asks.
"Yes, he's my brother." The girl says.
Ava places her hands on the pictures of the code as she and Sherlock try to get the girl to tell them about it. Suddenly, the lights go out and everyone looks up.
"He's here." The girl says.
"Stay here and hide Ava." Sherlock says before he takes off running. John tries to stop him before he helps the girls to hide. Ava hears gun shots and she looks at John.
"I really hope those miss Sher." Ava says.
"You know he's smarter than that." John says.
"He was almost strangled earlier. I barely saved his life." Ava says.
"I'll go help him. Bolt the door after me." John says and Ava nods. Ava waits patiently while she stares at Soo Lin Yao. Ava stands in the shadows as she worries about John and Sherlock. Her eyes widen when a guy appears behind Soo Lin Yao.
Ava dodges the gunshots as she runs out of the room and she runs into John who was coming back. They hear a final gunshot and the two heads into the room and finds the girl dead. They head to talk to the detective and then Sherlock tries to get what he wants from the Medical Examiner girl that is often flirting with Sherlock.
Later that evening, they return to the flat and Ava sits with her arms crossed. She looks away angrily as Sherlock tries to get her attention. He blinks at her confused.
"Right, um, John could I speak with you alone?" Sherlock asks before the two leave the room.
"What?" John asks.
"I need your advice." Sherlock says.
"Alright, we established that." John says.
"How do I talk to a girl?" Sherlock asks.
"You have no problem with that." John says.
"I mean literally." Sherlock says as he sighs.
"Are you asking me how you ask Ava to be your romantic partner?" John asks.
"Not exactly like that." Sherlock says.
"But..." John says.
"But yes. I basically am, yes." Sherlock says.
"Well, in my small experience... Girls really like it when you get them gifts and tell them the truth." John says before walking away. Sherlock sighs as he places his hand against his chin as he thinks.
Later the next day, John returns from his first day of work to find Ava asleep in a pile of books while Sherlock was thinking.
"Please tell me she's clothed." John says.
"Yes, why wouldn't she be?" Sherlock asks.
"Weren't you talking about her?" John asks.
"Yes, but I'm busy working a case." Sherlock says.
"Don't you think that's what makes her upset?" John asks.
"Should it?" Sherlock asks, "She loves my work."
"Ah." John says.
"We are going out tonight." Sherlock says.
"You and Ava?" John asks.
"All of us." Sherlock says.
"I've got a date." John says.
"Really? Take her with us then." Sherlock says.
That evening, they head to the circus. John is told that there are four tickets reserved in the name under Holmes and John sighs.
"My friend is also trying to romance his best friend." John says.
"Oh, that's quite alright, the more the merrier." The doctor lady, Sarah says.
"Sorry we are late." Ava says and Sarah's mouth opens wide in shock at Ava's outfit. She looked as if she was part of the act herself.
"What a gorgeous outfit." Sarah says.
"I like to dress for the occasion." Ava says.
"Well, it's beautiful." Sarah says.
"Where did you even get an outfit like that?" John asks.
"Mrs. Hudson." Ava says with a grin and John sighs.
"Don't worry we won't bother you." Sherlock says and John rolls his eyes.
They head up to where the circus was actually performing and Ava smiles as she stood with Sherlock. The show begins and Sherlock explains what is going on. Sherlock leaves the audience while the show continues. Ava watches the trapeze as her eyes narrow. The trapeze guy flies around creating quite the show and John looks at Ava.
"Where did Sherlock go?" John whispers.
"To get himself in trouble I'm sure." Ava whispers back. They watch Sherlock come flying off the stage behind the performance and John rushes over to help. As the group runs away, Sherlock grabs Ava's hand and pulls her.
They head to yell at the detective and then they head back to the flat with Sarah. Sherlock and Ava leave while John and Sarah as the flat. Sherlock and Ava begin translating the cipher with the correct book. They finish the cipher and Ava giggles.
"We did it Sherlock!" Ava says.
"Yes, yes we did." Sherlock says. They head into the house to tell John and Sarah that they solved it and Ava gasps as the flat was ransacked.
"Sher!" Ava says as she stared at the windows. He walks over to her and his eyes widen.
"Oh no." Sherlock says. Ava goes to follow him but Sherlock places his hands on her shoulders.
"Stay here in case they come back. I don't want you hurt." Sherlock says and Ava's eyes widen in shock.
"S-Sher..." She whispers and Sherlock walks over to grab a map. She stood there shocked as she watches Sherlock leave. She holds out her hand as she watches Sherlock go down the stairs.
The look in his eyes, he was utterly worried about John, but there was truth in his eyes that proved he'd be worried if she got hurt. She rushes after him anyway as she didn't want to be left behind she arrives in time to see Sherlock being choked by the trapeze guy again. She walks over and punches the guy hard enough to get him off of Sherlock and the trapeze goes to attack Ava when John makes the arrow shoot the trapeze guy.
"What are you doing here?" Sherlock says.
"When you and I are apart, you seem to get in more trouble." Ava says.
"She's got a point." John says and John apologizes to Sarah. Sherlock coughs while Ava helps him up.
"Well, thank you." Sherlock says and Ava blushes slightly as she looks away from Sherlock as she thought about what he said. She wondered if they'd ever be more than just friends like the two of them promised so many years ago.
The next day, John watches Ava walk over with the blanket over her head as she drags it out of the back room. His mouth drops open and Sherlock blinks confused.
"What?" Sherlock asks.
"I thought you said you two weren't..." John says.
"Afew years ago, she went through a terrible ordeal, couldn't find herselfsleeping. So, she wraps herself in a blanket cocoon then sleeps beside me. It'sthe best way she can sleep." Sherlock explains and John blinks confused as Avawhined as she lays down on the couch. The guys start laughing as John thoughtthat Ava was a really strong and brave when she's really just a normal girlwith nightmares that haunt her.
