“Catch me if you can” I giggled and ran as fast as I could in my little pink, orange and red dress, decorated with white beads. You better run for your life Sophie, or you’ll have to face the wicked tickles of Robo-Aron!” and with that being said he shot towards me almost impossibly fast, I sensed him behind me, so I sped up as fast I could until my muscles began to fail me so I quickly started to get up the ladder that led up to our tree house hoping that I’d make it early enough to hide but I only ended up missing one step and next thing I knew I was on my back, feeling the painful sensations, due to harsh impact, that shot up my back. “Sophie! Are you okay??” I heard Aron yell worriedly, I tried to talk but it seemed too hard to utter a word and I only ended up breaking down into sobs. I felt Aron hold me carefully so that I was in a sitting position facing him, “I’m so sorry Sophie, I never meant for this to happen.” He hugged me tight until I stopped crying and felt better. “It’s okay Aron, it really wasn’t your fault..thanks” I could feel my cheeks get warmer as I blushed and tucked a strand of chocolate brown hair behind my ear quickly getting up, before mom saw us. “How about we get some ice-cream? Peanut butter and chocolate..your favorite” he suggested, making the puppy dog face so that his beautiful emerald green eyes glistened in the sunlight and his golden-blonde hair glowed gloriously, how could I ever say no to that? “You always know how to make me feel better” I giggled and as I started to skip away from him teasingly, I heard what I was afraid I would, it was mom and I knew she wouldn’t be happy to know that I’d been hanging out with Aron again but I just don’t see why they don’t like him. “Sophie, get back in here now!” she scolded, familiar shivers made their way up my spine, signaling that it was time to get back inside before another one of their “mature arguments” with Arons parents started. “Bye Aron, see you at school” I whispered carefully, hoping that mom wouldn’t get mad at me for it but I could feel her glare at me, her eyes burned through my skin and alarmed my bones. As I got up the stairs to our front porch, I couldn’t bring myself to look her in the eye and that’s when she started “Sophie Andrew Miller, how many times do I have to tell you, do NOT play with the Hendricks’ child, he’s no good and neither are his parents!”
“But mom please” I whimpered as she dragged me up to my room to change. “What happened here darling? Did you fall??” I could see where this was going by the tone in her voice, “Did he push you sweetie? You tell me and I’ll give his parents a piece of my mind, I don’t know why you play with him, he’s two years older than you anyway!” My mom was always over protective since it had been hard for her to conceive for years now. “No! Mom Aron didn’t hurt me, I fell from the tree house, he helped me feel better, he was even gonna get me some peanut butter and chocolate ice cream...I like him mom” I said and I pushed myself away from her angrily.
“Sophie, what I say goes and you are not to socialize with him again, do you understand?” She said as she looked me in the eye, I didn’t want to look at her but she held me from my chin and brought my face up to hers. “Do you understand Sophie” it sounded more like a command than a question as she demanded sternly.
“I understand” I spat out.
When she left I changed into my white knee high shorts and put on a pink shirt polka dotted in white, I could feel a mixture of feelings stir up in my stomach before I started to cry and threw myself on the bed, I eventually fell asleep for hours until 7 pm. “What time is it?” I asked as I yawned until I realized that dad will be back from work anytime now, I quickly sat up, tied my hair and got over to my study desk. I grabbed my bag and took out the homework for the day, I just wanted to start in case he got here. After I was done with my homework I got downstairs only to find dinner ready, mom and dad both looking at me earnestly. I went over to my dad and kissed him on his cheek hoping that could ease up the intense atmosphere, but it didn’t. I think that’s probably when I realized why he looked cross, I just decided to act as if I was dumb enough to not know a thing. That’s when he said “So your mother tells me that you were “hanging out” with Aron, I don’t want to hear of that again, you are not to talk to the boy or his family.”
“But dad you don’t know him! It’s not my fault you hate him, why do I have to suffer from your business? Why is it that you hate them dad?” I replied quickly unhesitant.
He lowered his head slightly and rubbed his temples; mom looked away and continued to eat as if this conversation was of no interest to her. “This is none of your business, you will know in the future when you’re mature enough. I don’t want this topic to be reopened anytime soon Sophie and that’s the end of it.”
I obediently nodded and continued to eat the pot roast that mom had spent hours in the kitchen cooking.
