Mikan looked up at Hikaru gasping for air with the look of horror expressed on his face. Terrible memories flooded out of his mind and back into his heart. He couldn’t let go of Mikan no matter what she said or what she did. Mikan was afraid of the giant coming after them with his little monsters but they had already given up. The only other thing on her mind was Natsume with the other girl who looked almost the exact same as herself. Although, they looked similar, it was obvious that they were not the same person. The other girl had a darker shade of hair and she even dressed differently. Along with that, she had a different type of aura. Mikan wondered what it was that led Natsume to kiss her that way that he did. Didn’t she think to refuse?
Mikan: A-Akito? I wonder what happened to him? He said a name before, what was it? Sana, right?
Mikan continued to think out loud as she was still being held tightly by Hikaru. In a short amount of time after thinking, the bushes near them began to shake. Was it the giant and his monsters, thought Mikan. She couldn’t move. Neither of them could. They were frozen in fear of different things. Mikan tilt her head towards the ground and she shut her eyes tightly. She held Hikaru’s shirt tightly. Her mouth opened as she then screamed at the top of her lungs. A shadow came out from the bushes.
Akito: Why are you screaming?
Mikan: Ah-huh? Akito? It’s...just you.
Akito: Who did you think it was?
Mikan: The giant and his monsters. Sorry.
Akito: Don’t worry about it. Are you okay? Who is that guy?
Mikan: Ah- it’s Hikaru, he helped me get out of the maze. But, I’m not sure what’s wrong anymore. He won’t talk and he won’t move.
Akito: Well, we have to get moving before we get captured again. This place is seriously weird.
Mikan: Yeah, I know. I’ve thought that since day one.
Hikaru loosened his grip around Mikan. He slowly let go completely and sat back looking directly into Mikan’s eyes in fear.
Hikaru: Wha- What? What did you just say?
Mikan: I’ve thought that since day one?
Hikaru: Does that mean you’ve been here before?
Mikan: Sort’ve. I came her for my best friend Hotaru. I wanted to see her and then I was told that I was actually an A-...
Hikaru: DON’T...say it!!! Please say that you are not an alice.
Akito: Alice?
Mikan: Yeah, I am. A nullification alice. It isn’t very helpful for others besides myself.
Hikaru: You...You’re one of them.
Mikan: One of them? What do you mean?
Hikaru: Alice’s...They have unnatural powers that hurt people.
Mikan: That’s only if that’s the way you use them. Not all of them do though.
Hikaru: No, an alice is what landed me in the hands of that damn Giant. Alice’s, they’re all bad.
Mikan: I’m an Alice. I’m not bad, am I? I helped you and you helped me. You just discovered that I am an alice. Does that really make a difference?
Akito: Unnatural powers? So your like a witch or something?
Mikan: No. All I can do is protect myself from other Alices.
Akito: Ah-okay.
It didn’t matter what Mikan said. Hikaru was still afraid. He backed up as he tried to get himself up. He tugged on Akito’s long-sleeved shirt. He began to pull Akito back away from Mikan. She looked at them both confused. She didn’t understand what was so bad about her. She didn’t understand what was so bad about her alice.
Akito: Are you able to hurt someone?
Mikan: I-I don’t think so? No, I can’t. I can’t even protect them.
Mikan looked down at the ground, losing the smile she seemed to always have.
A sound of a crashing helicopter passed by them and came back as quickly as they could think. What was it? Were they being attacked again? Who was it this time? Why?
