The Nest

The storm carried on for days, there was no way anyone could come or go. The roads were flooded and we were isolated from the world. We had no choice but to get into an easy routine.

On the fourth night since the rain started I started feeling uncomfortable. I couldn't sit. I couldn't lay down. So I started cleaning the house. It was strangely  calming. Besides Cameron was already in bed, he couldn't tell me to stop. I laughed at the thought.

Every time I tried to do something in the house, Cam was there to take over. I couldn't even wash my own dishes without him taking over. It was as sweet as it was annoying.

"Ahhh," I moaned in pure discomfort, the scrubbing brush clattering to the floor, as a pinching pain runs around my side into my back. Frozen I wait for it to pass, it does, and I pick up the scrubbing brush and carry on.

Minutes later I stand in the doorway looking at the shiney clean floor proudly. I better get back to bed-  a sharper pain interupts my thoughts and I can feel my legs trembling as I fight against the pain.

By the time I reached the spare room, 2 more cramps have passed through me. It's not time, it's not time, there's no way it's time- I keep repeating to myself.

"What are you doing up?" Cam said from behind me. I let go of the door I've been clutching and turn around to face him.

He looks endearingly sleepy with his hair all roughed up, his eyes barely open, wearing only a pair of boxers.

"I was scrubbing the floor," I said honestly, "but I think I hurt my ba-"  I clutched my back as another sharp pain runs through it, while a warm liquid runs down my legs. Cam was next to me within seconds, worry clouding his face.

"Mom? It's me... Yes, Mom... Mom! It's
Genevieve, I think she's in labour," he says as he walks me to the bed. I didn't even see him dailing.

"Yes, he water just broke... No, I don't know, hold on..." he covers the mouth piece of his phone and asks, "How long have you had cramps?"

"About 30 minutes," I said shrugging, "it could me more." He frowned down at me as he repeated it to his mother.

"She was scrubbing the fucking floor... nesting? Nevermind that, Mother! She's in labour... No, the roads are flooded... Mom- Mother! Just stop talking for a second... You're going to have to talk me through it!"
