"I- I need- need to go home," I almost want to laugh at the bitter lie in those words. I don't have a home.
"Is that where you were walking to last night?" He asked. And when I hesitated he added, "or is that where you were walking FROM?
"It doesn't matter," I whisper as I walk backwards to the door. I can't stay here forever. I have to go. Sooner rather than later. His eyes are too warm. His hands are too gentle. I am not strong enough to go through more heartache and pain.
Before I have even made it through the doorway a doorbell chimed, making me jump and pause in my tracks.
Cameron jumped up and walked towards me. I couldn't stop myself from staring at his long legs. My eyes pausing on his bare feet when he stopped infront if me. He cleared his throat. My eyes flicker to his face.
The doorbell chimes again. Then I realized why he is standing infront of me. I stumbled forward, just scraping past Cameron to move out of his way. My arms burning where they touched his. My face burning with embarrassment.
Moments later I heard him open the door. Hushed tones down the passage and soon he returned with Doctor Alice.
I forgot she was coming back.
She went to got sit on her usual spot. I joined her by mine and Cameron didn't wait for a que to leave this time.
"So, I heard you've been awake since I was gone," she stated, "how do you feel?"
"I'm sore all over," I responded honestly. She wrote something on the clipboard.
"Have you eaten?" I nodded towards the stacked bowls on the table.
"Good. Good," she said as she wrote more things down.
"So what did the test say?" I ask impatiently.
"The test confirmed my suspension," she answered seriously, "I brought some machinery to..." her mouth was moving, but the words were not reaching my ears.
Confirmed.
It's been confirmed.
Tears blur my vision as I stare at a spot in the carpet and I have to fight to stop them from rolling down my cheeks.
"Genevieve," Alice called, the exasperation in her voice indicated it wasn't the first time, "Can I hook up the machine and then I'll show you what I found?"
I just nod. Maybe seeing it will make it reality.
The doctor set up the machine and soon I was laying on my back with cables running from my swollen abdomen to a monitor.
The doctor hooked up a staff like object to the ultrasound machine, then she takes out a tub of what looks like jelly.
"This is going to be cold," she whispered before rubbing it onto my abdomen.
