The Female Mechanic

The First Day

I woke up at exactly 5:45 and got out of bed. I popped my neck, back, and fingers knowing I'll never be fully awake until I do that. I notice that BB is still here and in his own way sleeping. I softly go over to him and sit in front of him. I gently place my hand on him to wake him up. He "wakes" up and immediately starts talking. "What time is it Kayla?" "It's 5:50 now BB. I'm sorry I'm always up really early." "It's ok poe is usually up in 10 more minutes. " "Ok well I'm going to the hanger to inspect all the X-wings in case they need any repairs and then when the others get up I'll ask if they want any modifications done to their ships." "Wow sounds like you're going to be busy." I laugh at his comment then look down at him. "That's probably a good thing though BB." He nods then says "you should probably get something to eat first." I nod and open the door for him. "Lead the way little man." He takes me down some hallways. Then into the big cafeteria. There was a couple of people milling around and eating but not as many as there were last night at dinner. I grab some toast and a piece of fruit then sit down at a table alone. I quickly eat then make my way to the hanger. I notice that BB is still following me. "Shouldn't you go to Poe? He's probably worried about you." "No he'll be fine. Besides I like you and you could probably use the company." I laugh at his comment and nod. "Alright alright then let's go you." We walked into the hanger to see absolutely no one there. It was almost nerve wracking that there wasn't anyone here with me seeing as everywhere in this base has people moving and making noise. I take my headphones out of the small bag I always kept with me and put them on turning on some music to relax myself while I work. I immediately go to the first x-wing and quickly check over it. Seeing nothing wrong with it I move on to the next x-wing. The only one that had some body maintenance needed was an Orange and Black one. I gasp and pull out the necklace I always keep on. My necklace had an orange and black ship on it but it was the old A-wings but it was still orange and black. Poe had made and gave it to me when we both started learning about ships from our parents. I look to BB. "This is Poe's ship isn't it?" I ask him. BB nods and replies "yep it is his." I grab my tools and started working on welding the tears in the wings and on the body of the ship. I had my music playing a little loud as no one was there to tell me it was loud enough to hear outside my headphones. BB had disappeared by now probably going to find Poe. I had just finished welding the last spot on the top of the ship when someone grabbed my foot. I jumped from the fright then fell bracing for impact of the floor. But it never happened instead my back and legs hit something soft yet strong. I opened my eyes realizing I had them closed and see a pair of brown ones looking at me with worry. "I am so sorry. I didn't men's to make you fall off. I did call your name but you didn't hear me." Poe said all in hurry. "Oh um sorry. But uh can you put me down now?" He blushed realizing that he was still holding me. He gently set me on my feet on the ground. "I thought I told you you had the day off today so we could catch up." "Yeah you did but I figured that I would get some work done today so I wasn't loaded tomorrow." "But there wasn't much to do anyway." "Oh well I still did it." "Alright alright well let's go we've got a whole day of adventure and catching up to do." And with that he pulled me away from my work and down the hall to the adventures ahead.
