A male Night Fury hurriedly looked for somewhere to hide his eggs. His mate was trying to dig a trench to bury them, despite Storm's protests. Opaque was his mate. She had kept her relationship with him and her eggs a secret from the Kingdom, but now, King Dark and Queen Shadow's scouts had learned that Storm, the village caretaker, and Opaque, the duchess, had mated, and the King and Queen of the Night Furies were bringing soldiers to destroy the eggs.

Opaque and Storm had known the consequences. A lowlife and a highlife could not mate, otherwise the balance of rankings would be destroyed. Yet Storm was drawn to her, the breathtaking black Night Fury, that, in the moonlight, glowed white.

"Storm." Opaque was breathing hard. "Storm!" she called again, cutting through his thoughts. "Look."

Storm followed her gaze to the older of the two eggs. Cracks were spreading over it. "Not now," he groaned. "Don't hatch now."

A small nose poked out followed by a head, two forefeet, and then the tumbling hatchling came out. Gray markings covered him. He approached the other egg cautiously, and pushed it lightly. It rocked back and forth, and he jumped back with a squeak, startled.

Despite, their dire situation, Storm chuckled.

When he saw that the egg was not a threat, the young hatchling nudged it, trying to get it open. Cracks began to cover the other egg.

"Maybe two hatchlings is better than a hatchling and an egg?" he asked, trying to cheer up Opaque. But she was still as stone.

Two Night Furies were approaching. Anyone, besides other Night Furies, wouldn't be able to see the shapes camouflaging in the dark sky, but the increased night vision of their species of Fury could easily make out the flying dragons.

Opaque sighed. They didn't carry the regal demeanor of the Royals, nor the orderly form of a soldier. The two other Night Furies landed and gasped for breath.

"We know the trouble you two are in," one of them, with a scarred face, explained. "We can take the eggs, hide them, safe and sound, and they will be cared for."

"We have already told the Royals that the eggs were a mistake, and you never really had feelings for each other," added the second, smaller, Night Fury. "And that the hatchlings died in the eggs. It's harsh, yes," he said, when the two mates glared at him, "but necessary. If we did not tell them that you would have never been able to return to the Night Furies."

"Decide quickly! The Royals are almost here. The only thing is, if you give them to us, the hatchlings, as I now see, they will be raised separate," the first Night Fury warned.

A bolt of lightning made the sky flare. A roar of thunder shook the ground, and rain came pouring down. The first hatchling, and the new one, who was out of his eggs, began to glow. The gray marks that both of them had pulsed light blue.

"Take them," said Storm.

"Take them somewhere safe," pleaded Opaque. The duchess's pupils were big, black orbs in her yellow-green eyes.

"We promise," the first Night Fury said. "I am Hidden and this is Speed. If you ever need to contact us, then decipher this code. Where all of the elements collide, the secret society resides. If you ever go to them, tell them; Earth, Fire, Water, Air. I come with peace and sent by the fair. Got it? Now fly back! Before the soldiers find you!"

The two of the secret society flew away. Opaque and Storm parted. They did not want to be seen flying back together. They hoped that the glowing young hatchlings would survive.
