"Now what are your names? "To be honest, I didn't know if I could trust this little girl. We had just met her after all. However, Luna seemed to know more than we did about all of this.
"I'm Roxanne Schaeffer, And this is my brother, Lance. "I indicated the little boy on my back. "Hello, "he said. "It's nice to meet you." Wow, that's the fastest I've seen Lance get over his fear.
"So Luna," I pressed on, "what do you mean 'loop'?"
The pale girl folded in a small bit like a moon flower when the sun rises, but she soon regained her confidence. "I don't know everything, but I know someone who does. If you want, I can take you to her."
Lance was shaking a bit on my back, but I could tell it was from excitement, not fear. Luna seemed like she knew what she was talking about, so I made up my mind. "All right, "I said, "I'd rather have answers then be in the dark. What about you Lance? "
"That would be great, Roxy, " he said from my back. Luna reached out to me. "Come with me, "she said solemnly. I took her hand and she led us into the woods.
After we had been walking a short ways, Lance asked a question. "So Luna, how did you do that back at the old house?" Luna stopped and turned to face us.
"What exactly do you mean by that? "
My brother didn't need to say it, I knew what he meant. "You know, when you had that glowing aura." I said. "What was that? " Luna simply smiled and responded with, "It's my peculiarity." Lance and I exchanged a look of confusion. "Your what?!" A giggle escape from the little pale girl. "It looks like I'll have to explain a bit, after all."
Luna explained everything she knew. "We are not like normal people, we are peculiar, "she said. "Peculiars are able to do things that normal people can't. Some abilities are common while others are rare."
"I'm very confused, "said Lance.
Luna giggled again, "you'll see what I mean when we get there. "
"Get where, exactly?"
"Why, to the house of course! Miss Peregrine wants to meet you!"
I had no idea what Luna was talking about, but I was too afraid to ask a question. Usually, I'm the first person to raise my hand to ask a question. Come on, Roxanne, just ask it! "Who is Miss Peregrine? "
"She's our ymbrine," Luna stated.
"What's an..."
"Wow, you ask a lot of questions, "she said with a hint of surprise.
"Thanks, "I replied. "My dad says asking questions is the quickest way to understanding. "
"Your father sounds like a wise man. "
"I guess, but I want an answer to my question. What is a... Whatever you said?"
"An ymbrine," Luna stated. "They are special peculiars who can manipulate time. They usually watch over a group of peculiar children in a loop. "
Before I could ask her another question, Luna pressed on.
"This place here is a loop. Now I'll be the one to ask a question: what year is it out there?"
I said it is if everyone knew it, "1966."
"So, then it's been almost twenty-six years since this loop has been established."
"Wait, you're saying it's... 1940?"
"September 3, 1940; all day, every day."
She had to have been joking, but Luna's expression told me she was being serious. Though, the second she saw Katie, the girl's expression turned to a happy one. "Is this your cat? What's her name?" Judging from her excitement, she must like cats.
