Yaris

I got off work a little bit early, so I decided to go home and do some laundry. I got my coin card and made my way down the laundry room in my building. As I’m walking I bypass a few men shooting dice in the hallway. “Ayy mami why don’t you let me slide up in that.” one boy said, grabbing on my arm. “Get the fuck off me, don’t touch me crusty ass nigga coño, lambe bolsa, cara e semilla y bajo a mierda!” I replied, slapping him hard in the face. The boys surrounding him Ohhh’d in amazement. I picked my laundry basket back up and continue to make my way the laundry room. “I got you next time bitch. TRUST.” the boy said, holding his face walking away. Once I got to the laundry room, I put my headphones in and started my loads. After I put all of my loads in the washer, I sat down on the bench and decided text Daniel.

Me: Hola papi, how you doing?

Dan: Hey you busy later? I gotta talk to you about something.

Me: Yeah, sure. What did you want to talk about?

Dan: You’ll find out when I come and get you.

Me: Oooh you taking me out??

Dan: You could say that. You don’t have to dress all nice.

Me: You said that the last time, when you first took me out and I ended up being under dressed for the occasion -.-

Dan: lol, alright you can dress up, but not too much. It’s just a lil restaurant in Soho no biggie.

Me: Why go to a restaurant when I can just cook myself?

Dan: What is with Dominican women and restaurants? smh

Me: We just would rather cook what we made ourselves versus anyone else’s.

Dan: I can understand that a little, but we still going out. So I’ll see you tonight at 7?

Me: Si papi, I’ll see you at 7. I’ll let you get back to whatever you’re doing. *besos*

Dan: iight, later

.I did a little dance and quickly stopped. I put my phone on lock and went back to my laundry. I can’t wait for later on.

*3 hours later*

I finished the last touches of my make-up and stood back and viewed myself in the full-length mirror. I kept it a little simple with a simple black skirt, white crop-top tee and a floral blouse. I put my black strap sandals, when Daniel knocked on my door. “Who is it?” I asked, already knowing the answer. “Policia! Policia” Dan said in a real bad Spanish accent. I laughed, and swung the door open to see him in all white, smiling at me. He was so sexy in his all white attire. “Don’t get dressed up too much huh?” I threw back up in his face. “You know I don’t go anywhere under dressed. Ready to go?” he replied, stepping in giving me a kiss on my cheek. ”Yeah, let’s go.” I said, grabbing my clutch purse. I locked my door and we were off. Are we about to become a couple? Why is he doing all of this? If so, my night is about be completely made I thought as we rode through to streets.

I decided to take Yaris out, to try and see if I can come to a firm decision on whether I want her as my girl or not. As of right now, I’m leaning towards the idea of her and I being a couple, but in the back of my mind is blocking me from being 100% with her. That same girl from the casino. Yesterday when I left Spin’s house, I thought I saw a girl that looked exactly like her. I hopped out my car and chased her down only to find out it was a teenage girl. I quickly apologized and ran back into my car, that almost got ticketed by a cop. Throughout the car ride, I stole glances over at Yaris. She was smiling to herself, playing with her necklace. “What you over there smiling for?” I asked. “I’m just surprised. We’ve never been out on an actual date before. I never thought we would get like this” she replied. “Well looks like we are right now.” I said, moving her curls out of the way. “What you mean we are right now? she asked. “You’ll find out when sit down and eat.” I replied. She turned back to face the window, and I could see her smiling to herself in the reflection of the window. We pulled up to one of my favorite spot in SoHo Fools Gold. It was small, intimate Caribbean cuisine restaurant, which was perfect for me and Yaris. We were seated in a cozy booth near the back, so we wouldn’t be disturbed to much by other people. After we ordered, we enjoyed the smooth Soca sounds traveling around the dimly-lit room. As she looked around smiling to herself once more, I grabbed her hand. “What are you thinking about?” I asked, stroking her knuckles with my thumb. “About why you are actually holding my hand in public. You never do this Daniel.” she said, looking at our hands together. “Maybe I haven’t had a reason to until now.” I responded. “And that reason would be…?” she asked. Before I could say anything our food came. “I guess we’ll wait until after we eat.” I replied, taking my fork out.

The way Dan is acting right now has me feeling all kinds of good. I’ve been wanting to be like this for a while. I’ve been wanting to be spontaneous with Dan for the longest, but was really ready for it now? My madre always said that things you want so bad come unexpected, just to show you if you really want as bad as you think you do. Dan and I being a couple is something that I’ve wanted from the moment I laid eyes on him. But could this be just a test like my mom preaches to me all the time? I’ve been juggling with it the entire time that Dan and I have been together. I looked up at him and seen him zoned off. Kind of like how it was the last time we had sex. The same facial expression and all. What the hell is he thinking about? I thought. “Are you still thinking about losing that game Daniel?” I asked. He snapped out of his little trance and looked at me. “I been over that girl. Wait how di- oh nevermind. Spin told me you called him.” he said, taking a sip of his drink. “Oh so why are you all zoned out, like the last time we were together.” I asked. “I’ve been thinking about this.” he responded, taking my hand in his. I smiled “And you’ve come to the conclusion that..?” I asked, looking deep in the eyes. “Well if it’s alright with you, I’d li-” my phone range. I quickly, retrieved it out of my purse. It was Mrs. Sotelo, my next door neighbor. Why is she calling me? I thought as I answered it. “Mrs. Sotelo? What’s wrong?” I asked. “Yaris, someone broke into your house. I heard the loud noise and it was a bunch of hooligans, come home quick!” she yelled, all in one breath. “Oh my God, I’m on my way now.” I said, letting the tears fall down my face. “What’s wrong? What happened?” Dan, asked. “We have to get back to my apartment. Someone broke in.” I said, getting up. “Alright, let’s go.” he replied throwing a hundred dollar bill on the table. We got in the car and Dan sped off. About 20 minutes later, we got to my building. We rushed up to the my apartment when I stopped. The door was busted off the hinges. I walked in and began crying even harder. My TV was gone, all the pictures on the wall were broken. There was graffiti all the walls. There were two big cuts on both the sofa and the loveseat. I ran to my room to see all of my drawers taken out of the dressers and thrown all over my room. My bed was turned over, clothes everywhere, all my jewelery taken, even the watch my abuela got me as a graduation gift. My emotions got the best of me and I fell to my knees and cried hard. Daniel came behind and held me tight. “Come on, you’re not staying here. Pack a bag.” he said, pulling me to my feet. I got together what I could and we left my apartment. Dan managed to put the door back on the hing, so I could lock it. We got back to his place and I just laid down. He laid next to me and held me tight. “Don’t worry babe we’ll get your stuff back on track.” he said, kissing me on my forehead. I just cuddled up under him and silently cried myself to sleep.

*the next morning*

I decided to get up early and cook Dan breakfast. It was the least I could do after he took me in. I managed to call my landlord and tell him about the break-in, and he told me he’s put a new lock on, and told me to come pick it up when I get back there. I called my renter’s insurance and filed a claim with them, so I’d be given the money back for all of my damaged property. I’m really bummed that I won’t be able to get my watch back that my abuela got me for graduation, but I’ll just have to get over it. “Wow, you went all out.” Dan said, walking in with no shirt on. “Well good morning to you. Sit down, I made Pancakes, Eggs with cheese and Sausages, I even made fresh lemonade for you.” I said, walking over to him, kissing him on the cheek. “Damn girl, you must really love me.” he said, taking a seat. “I just wanted to show you that I appreciate you taking me in. I have good news, my landlord is going to replace my door and my renter’s insurance is covering all of my damage to my property so I’ll be out of your hair soon.” I said, fixing his plate and handing it to him. “Yaris, you don’t have to leave and besides I don’t want my girlgoing back, when whoever broke in your house can comeback again.” he said. Wait a minute. Did he just say my girl? I thought. “Your girl?” I asked, seeing if I heard him correctly, placing his plate and glass of lemonade down in front of him. “Yeah, that’s what I wanted to tell you yesterday before we got interrupted. If it’s alright with you, I want us to be exclusive.” he said, wrapping his arm around my waist, pulling me closer to him. I smiled and sat on his lap. “Of course it’s alright with me.” I said, leaning in to have our first kiss and boyfriend and girlfriend. I got up and watched him eat. Words can’t explain how happy I am right now. I guess the break-in help my decision. But I am going back to my apartment. My mom did not raise me to depend fully on a man, so I’ll just stay here until everything at my apartment is all set back up. However, I’m in this relationship all the way. I finally got my man.
