On the train, I'm pulled into a compartment by Ron. "Ron!" I exclaim, hugging him.

Just then, a voice over the train's speakers says, "will the Head Boy and Girl please report to Compartment 3-B." I give Ron a quick kiss. "See you later." I whisper.

I go down the corridor and into 3-B, where I find...Draco Malfoy? "Malfoy?" I can't keep the surprise out of my voice. "Mudblood." His voice is cool. I hold up my letter. "I'm Head Girl." He holds up a letter as well. "I'm Head Boy." I feel my face flush. Who in their right mind would make Malfoy Head Boy?

"So, I guess we're here to..." Malfoy checks his letter.  "Get acquainted and make sure the Prefects are doing their jobs." He reads.

"Let's skip the first step. Let's go see how the Prefects are doing." I say shortly, stalking out of the compartment with Malfoy close behind me.

"Why are you following me?" I ask three corridors later. "I'm not, Granger. I'm just checking the same corridors you are." He smirks, and I roll my eyes.

"I'm going to go change into my robes." I say shortly, walking back to the compartment that Ron was in. It now contains Ron and Harry.

"Hermione, what's wrong?" Harry asks. "Malfoy is Head Boy." I say curtly. Ron springs to his feet. "Blimey! Who-?" Harry pulls him down. "Calm down. Although," he adds, "he has a point. Who on Earth would make Malfoy Head Boy?"

I pause in the act of pulling on a skirt. "I have no idea - I can't imagine what McGonagall was thinking." I say. No one has a reply.

During the welcome-back feast that evening, I can't stop looking at the candles, the food, the enchanted ceiling...It's just like I remember.

"Are you happy to be back?" Ginny asks. "Yes-shh!" I add, as McGonagall steps up to the podium. "We will all take a moment to honor the students who should be sitting among us tonight." She unrolls a sheet of parchment and reads, in a clear voice edged with sadness,

"From Gryffindor:
Lavender Brown
Collin Creevy
Tina William
Jordan Peakes.
"From Ravenclaw:
Winona Adder
Thompson Change
Niccki Asher.
"From Hufflepuff:
Ash Grable
Zeke Snyder
Cynthia Charm
Ronda Charm
Slewit Gerber
Jessica Winslow.
"From Slytherin:
Herb Knott
Fiona Wilson
Vincent Crabbe."

She stops and clears her throat. "Sixteen amazing students who should be sitting here right now. Let us bow our heads in memorium."

Before bowing my head, I sneak a glance at the Slytherin table. To my surprise, I see Malfoy, his head bowed, fighting back tears. Of course. I realize. He lost one of his best friends. I feel a pang of sympathy, but I push it back. This is Malfoy. I remind myself. Not your friend.

I bow my head, thinking about Collin's face, and about Lavender's smile. They should be here. I think, crying a little.

After the feast, Professor McGonagall motions for Malfoy and me to stay behind. Great. I think.

"Miss Granger, Mr. Malfoy, I know this is not an ideal situation, but please make the best of it." She says. "Yes, Professor." I say. "Yes, ma'am." Malfoy mumbles.

McGonagall goes on. "You will be patrolling the corridors - together - from seven-ten PM every night. You will help supervise study periods. And you will learn to be...civil...to each other. Are we clear?" I nod. "Yes, Professor." Malfoy sighs. "Yes, Professor." She nods. "Dismissed. You have corridors to patrol."

We walk out of the Great Hall together, but not remotely near each other. It had better stay this way. I don't want him near me.

"So. Mudbl-Granger - what's the deal with you and Weasel?" Malfoy sneers. "Why do you care?" I snap. "Oh, just wondering when you two are expecting your first child, is all." He shrugs, and I can barely contain my anger. "You think we-? Malfoy, that is disgusting!" I cry. He smirks. I ignore him. Annoying little ferret. I think.
