Leaving the rest of the town below I climbed to the top of the grassy hill, the July sun beating down on my face. Usually I would have taken the less steep path on the other side but I was in a rush and with a glance at my phone I realised I was seven minutes late. Shit.

Teagan stood on the stone path that leads to school, her arms crossed over her chest. I hurried towards her, not wanting to make it eight minutes late. I knew she was pissed with me but I decided to play dumb.

“Sorry I’m late, Ryan took over the bathroom, I had to wait an hour before I could get ready” I explained with what I hoped was apologetic smile.

“Whatever you’re always late” she argued. I wasn’t, I always got here before her then had to wait another ten minutes for her to show up without even an apology. I kept my mouth shut and followed her as she stormed up the stone path lined with trees in the direction of school.

“So how was last night?” I asked as I caught up in a hope of distracting her.

“Rubbish, seeing as you didn’t come out” here we go I thought. “I know, I’m sorry, I had to tidy the house and cook dinner seeing as Mum and dad were at work.” “More excuses” she glared at me, then moving her attention to the crowds of pupils who stood at the end of the path or sat on the grass. It was the last day of term so traditionally everyone wore non-school uniform. I looked round at the colourful outfits including Teagan’s. From her long blonde hair to her floral summer dress and flip flops then looking down at myself, in black shorts and a tucked in over sized Guns n’ Roses t-shirt. The one splash of colour on my outfit was my red doc martens. Teagan hated my clothes whatever I wore, once she threatened to never speak to me again unless I bought a dress, and obviously I bought it, I’ve never worn it though, it’s not that I don’t like it, I just don’t think I could pull it off plus it wasn’t really me.

The school bell rung in the distance and the crowds of people flooded through the gates that lead to the ancient stone building that was our school, Stonely secondary school. I struggled to keep up with Teagan who was now walking off with a ginger girl named Beth who wore pretty much the same thing. I gave up and walked at my own pace. I looked up at the stone building, the morning sun hung low in the sky, casting shadows of trees across the pale stone. It used to be an old house but after the Second World War it was converted into a school since the original one was blown up.

I followed the crowd through the huge wooden front doors that lead into a reception with a dark marble floor, white walls and multiple wooden stair cases. I climbed the set nearest the door that lead up to the second floor. As I made my way down the corridor, the wooden floor creaked beneath the weight of the students filing into their form rooms. The walls that used to be covered in posters of books and films some in English and some in French were now bare giving the corridor a cold and empty feeling, apart from the few students still making their way to form. I could just make out Teagan’s blonde head bob through the door of our form at the end of the corridor.

Being the last person to walk into form, I closed the door behind me. Looking round the same white walls and blue carpeted floor as the rest of the school classrooms, I was shocked by the amount of orange faces. Make up and jewelry were banned from school on normal days, but not today and the girls were definitely taking advantage of that with near enough a whole bottle of foundation on and bracelets up to their elbows.
