I knocked softly and came into the room. As I open the door, I was welcomed by the sight of Sophie wiping Lulu's hand. She was still unconscious from yesterday's accident. Brother Enoch came yesterday, later in the night, diagnosing her with a bruised spine, mild concussion and a few contusions. But he cannot explain why she hasn't regained consciousness. He gave us an elixir, but that was it. So now Sophie is bathing her on the bed, and she doesn't even twitch. She's lying dead still, her indicator of life just the pumping of oxygen in her chest. Up, down. Up, down.
The blood replacement runes helped. Colour flushed back into her cheeks, but the tips of her hands is blue, like they're not getting enough blood flow. I help Sophie clean her, but I can still see dried blood in the strands of her hair. Afterwards, Sophie pulled a chair and sat beside her. She's not even doing anything, she was just there for her. I pull up a chair across Sophie and sat. And we just sat there. We sat there for a good one hour before I saw a movement. Lulu's finger twitched. I wasn't sure.
"Sophie. Look at her," I said. We waited for another movement, and then I thought I was just imagining it. I was hoping for her consciousness so much it's very possible that I only imagined it. Until her finger twitched again. Sophie let out a gasp the same time as I did, so I know she must've seen it too.
"Call Mrs. Branwell," Sophie said quickly, then got out of the room. I stood up with haste, and walked even more hastily to find Charlotte. I didn't even knock when I opened her study, but she wasn't there. There's only one other place she would be. I walked as quickly as I can to the library, and slammed the door open. Charlotte was standing with Will and Jem, coincidentally. Their apparent discussion stopped abruptly.
"What is it ?" Charlotte asked. But Will understood immediately. He didn't even say anything, just ran as fast as a bullet, passing me in the entrance.
"It's Lulu," I said, and Charlotte followed Will's footsteps. But unlike Will, she stopped when she got to me.
"Thank you," she said, and then walked urgently to the infirmary. I'm now walking with Jem, who as always, gave me a radiant smile.
"Her fingers moved," I told without him asking.
"Brilliant. That's her first movement since she was hurt," Jem assessed. When we got to the infirmary, everyone was there except for Henry. Cecily and Will stood over Lulu beside her bed, discussing. Sophie had come back with a tray of what seems like to be water and sugar, and Charlotte is holding her hands. I resumed my sitting position, Jem standing beside me. Everyone was talking, but their gaze was on Lulu. When her fingers progressed from twitching to actual movement, everyone tensed. When she actually let out a sound, a barely audible moan, everyone fell dead silent. Her eyes fluttered, and it seems like she was trying to open them. Not one minute later, her eyes was fully open, but it didn't move. I looked at her, with her paled complexion now and apparent bruises. She didn't even look the least bit fragile. She still looked like a warrior.
Finally, her eyes moved. It went from scanning the ceiling to scanning everybody in the room. She tried a faint smile that looked gorgeous on her face.
"Welcome back," Charlotte said. Sophie tended to her needs, helping her sit up and poured the water into her mouth. It was much needed, seeing how her lips are cracked. She drank the whole glass in big gulps, swallowing easily if not hungrily. She got a bit more colour in her cheeks after the water, and she sat up, Sophie helping by putting pillows behind her to support her back. As soon as she's seated properly, Will went to her and sat beside her legs.
"That was a damn stupid move," was the first thing that came out of his mouth. It didn't came out sounding harsh or reprimanding, but soothing and soft. I rarely hear Will speaks like this except to me.
