It was a chilly night. The stars were glowing along with the city lights and the cars running by were a soothing background sound to the silence inside of Sonic and Tails's house.
Sonic was combing and styling his quills to look presentable for his date with Amy - he hadn't really planned to actually meet her, but he felt obliged to and he would've felt guilty if he had dumped her again. He wanted to be kind, polite and able to express his feelings towards her. He wanted her to finally understand and accept that he couldn't reciprocate her feelings. He wanted to find true, simple words which wouldn't destroy her self-esteem or heart.
However, to be able to ponder his words without any distraction, he needed to know that Tails would be home safely and, more importantly, that he wouldn't be alone. In order to be sure that the twin-tailed kitsune would be watched over, he had called Shadow - or, rather, he tried to get Rouge to persuade him into babysitting Tails for the night, again, - and, shockingly, he had actually come again.
The black and red hedgehog was sitting on the couch in the living room, his arms were crossed against his chest and his legs were slightly parted. He was wearing a black button-up shirt that showed his white fluffy pecs, a pair of dark red straight pants and his trademark hoover boots.
He sighed.
He was feeling uncomfortable, a long time ago he he would've never cared about Tails at all - the time when he wasn't even sure what his voice sounded like - but as he started to spend more and more time with the young kitsune, he had made him feel oddly calm.
The fluffy kitsune's presence radiated peacefulness, sweetness and a subtle sense of tenderness.
"Can tenderness even be transferred by radiation?"
He sighed again.
That was the problem. He was getting all mushy for an insignificant mutated fox, which happened to be the cutest being he knew.
On some level, he reminded him of Maria. His fur was golden and soft like her hair, his eyes were icy blue, deep and gentle, just like hers. She was always kind to everyone, always ready to help with anything someone might ask her, and she never demanded something in return. Her best reward were the people's smiles - she was just like Tails. He was perfect.
At that moment, Sonic entered the living room while pushing a sleeping Tails in his wheelchair. The fluffy kitsune had broken both of his legs a few days before, after crashing with his Tornado 1 - the blue hedgehog had taken all the blame on himself, even if his little brother had insisted that it wasn't his fault - because he hadn't checked the engine correctly due to the little time they had had to get ready to depart.
Shadow's eyelids softened at the sight, now he totally looked like her.
"Thank you for coming" the blue fur ball started.
Shadow looked at him and only nodded.
"I can't believe I'm going to say this again, but thank you, really. Thank you so much for all you've for me so far..." he paused for a moment, before looking down shyly, adding
"...please, be careful with him, I don't know what I'd do if-"
Shadow smirked and replied: "Spare me the momma bear talk: I know how to take care of someone, probably even more than you do"
"Shadow, please, there's no need for harsh comebacks right now. I already have too many things to think about, I've been really stressed lately and I'm telling you this as a friend, could you please help me? I'm just worried, that's all..."
