The brightest colors fill my head

[ years ago ]

A long, devastated sigh left my lips as I hugged my arms tightly. A hand rested upon my shoulder, causing me to look up at my older brother, who's gaze was locked onto the rocket standing before us. "Do you have to go?.." I asked quietly as a few tears spill down my cheeks. "You know I don't want to leave you, Aki.." Shiro let out a soft sigh aa he gathered me in his arms.

Much to my dislike, he was being sent out to Kerberos to accompany a scientist and a pilot for some secret mission. Multiple times I have voiced my disagreement with Shiro going out into space, where no one knew what was out there. He knew how I felt about it too, but there wasn't much he could do.

"I think you'll do fine," Shiro said before adding, "Just promise to not give mom and dad a hard time while I'm gone." At his words, more tears formed in my eyes and I hugged him even tighter.

"Just please come back home..."

[ present day ]

I had spent years trying to find my brother, after the day that my parents and I were told that Shiro was dead. How my parents believed that nonsense, I will never know. But that day, I decided to set out into the unknown and bring my brother home. If only I knew what I was getting myself into.

My first month into space and I was attacked by a race of aliens known as the Galra. A bunch of assholes, I gotta say. A few short weeks after that, I crash landed on a planet and was recruited into the Intergalactic Traveling Circus all in the same day. At that point in time, I came to terms that Shiro may be dead after all and worked to supporting myself. After being in the circus for a few months, we were performing on a planet that was occupied by the Galra, and I had happened to catch the eye of Commander Sendak, and I had fallen for him, long story short. But, all I was to him was a good fuck, like most human men. But, still unknown to him, I ended up pregnant with his daughter, Magnolia.

"Akira!" the ringmaster called as he wobbled out towards me. "Yes?" I answered as I gently bounced my toddler daughter against my hip, huffing a bit of hair out of my eyes. "Do you have your set ready?" What a stupid question. "Of course, Luthos, I always perform the same set, so it's always prepared," I answered with a roll of my eyes and I turned my attention to my daughter, who was gently tugging on a bit of my hair. A small smile tugged at the corners of my lips as I watched her adoringly. "I assure you, Luthos, The Dancing Siren won't disappoint, like always." Magnolia gurgled in my arms, dividing my attention to her again as I pecked the tip of her lavender nose. "That's right, sweetums, tell Mr. Luthos that Mama will do amazing, like always." The toddler looked up at me with wide purple and yellow eyes, before breaking into a small toothy grin. 

I went and set her down by Baba, Luthos' sister and the only one who was willing to help me out with Magnolia while I performed. She was so good with her and my daughter liked her better than the other performers. As I went and did the same thing that I had been doing for the past few years since I crashed onto the same planet the circus was performing. Do I regret joining the circus? If I was asked that a long time ago, I would've said no, but after giving birth to Magnolia, a part of me still hopes to give her a better life than the one I'm providing right now. 

As the curtains to the tent closed, Baba came out into the ring, holding a sleeping Magnolia. "Kira... are you still thinking about him?" A long sigh left my lips as I hung my head low. "Not a quintant goes by where I don't think about my brother.." I mumbled as I turned towards Baba and cradled my little munchkin into my arms. "Do you think he'd love her, Baba? Even though she's half Galra?" I asked lowly, my voice breaking as I felt hot tears prick my eyes. Baba placed her hand onto my shoulder.

"He would have loved her more than anything."

As I sat in my bunk, my fingers gingerly held the only picture I had left of my sister, my eyes scanning the photo of a young smiling Akira with concern and guilt. Gazing down at the photo, I could still hear her words as clear as day. "Just please come back home..." A part of me wondered if Akira knew something would go wrong during the Kerberos mission, and that I wouldn't come back. Thinking to myself, in the end, I did come home briefly, however I was back out into space after being strapped down, and being saved by the other four Paladins. But, still.. she surely would have known about the ship wreck? Unless the Garrison kept that information away from civilians. 

A knock at the door caused me to snap out of my thoughts and my gaze met with Keith's, and I physically eased a bit as I let out a soft sigh of relief. "Oh, hey, Keith," I said as I straightened up, "What's up?" The red paladin shifted his weight a bit before speaking, "Coran says that the Intergalactic Traveling Circus will be in town at our next stop tomorrow, and everyone really wants to go." I closed my eyes a bit before a small smile came to my lips. "I think that's a great idea, I'm sure everyone could use a break from all of this fighting we've been doing lately." Keith gave me a pointed look and his gaze traveled down to the photo in my hand. "Are you thinking about her again, Shiro?" he asked, but sensing he already knew the answer, the paladin came over to me and sat beside me.

"You'll see her again."

A/N:

my first voltron fic !! ack!! anyways, a part of the inspiration of this story is because I watched the greatest showman the other night and I fell in love - and i thought of a keith romance typa thing where he falls in love with a member of the circus, but then to top it off, i was like "what if shiro had a long lost sibling he left behind on earth, that went out into space to find him like pidge did with her brother an dad, and like joined the circus ??"
