It all began in Yellowstone’s Caldera, where a recently formed wolf pack has just delivered its first litter of pups. Within it, is one pup who stands out. Coal.
In his pack, a white female named Tehya is the reigning matriarch. Her daughter, Weeko, is a subordinate and Coal's mother.
For two months, Coal and his siblings enjoy a pampered life; the adults constantly feed, groom, and casually fuss over them. Coal's grandfather, the packs Alpha Male, Ahiga, takes charge of the day's food delivery, an elk calf. He won't allow any other adults to eat until the pups, especially Coal, eat their fill.
The pups' lives are pretty simple and just like any other wolf litter, eat and play, but they do form a pecking order of their own…and Coal, well…usually ends up on the bottom.
His brothers and sisters practice the dominance they'll use later in life. The only problem is that aggression isn’t really Coal's thing; he just loves the game and exploring the riverbanks beside the den.
Right now, this is his entire world, but there’s plenty for a curious pup to discover. Beyond the safety of the den, Yellowstone is a far more dangerous place.
Coal watched as a herd of Bison scampered onto the valley. He desperately wanted to just trot down there and greet them, but two bulls colliding head to head was enough to keep him right where he is.
His grandfather, Ahiga, must face the hazards if he is to feed his pack. He boldly passes by the herd, sniffing down a nearby carcass. He’s normally a hunter, but when he finds a dead, rotting bison just sitting there, he quickly turns scavenger. However, such behavior has issues of its own.
Just 15 meters away, a big mother Grizzly Bear intends to raid him of his prize. Ahiga does his best to defend the meal, but there is little he can do against an angry, 550 lb Grizzly.
He goes in for a leg bite, causing the bear to face him. Coal yelps and howls at his grandfather, terrified for his safety. But just before Ahiga could make a move, the bison surround the 2 predators. The smell of the carcass's blood draws the Bison into a defensive display, therefore attacking both of them.
The bear knows if she gets injured, her cubs will starve, so she abandons the carcass for something easier, and Ahiga is free to take the scraps of meat he needs to bring to his grandchildren.
