Meanwhile, as the adults contiuously collect food, the pups are growing fast, growing 1 ½ Kilos everyday, and by mid October, Coal along with his siblings weigh 20 Kilos. They are all nearly full grown now, and can now tag along with the adults. At this moment, Coal can finally try something every juvenile must learn, his first lesson at Hunting. They all watch and learn as Ahiga, along with several other pack members, Track down a herd of elk and single out a weak cow. They corner it against a wall and instantly go for the kill. With adults to teach him, Coal is soon on his way to becoming a hunter, But..not soon enough. He picks up an unfamiliar scent, a rather scary one, and his grandparents know far to well what it means...An invading pack from the South; The Shadow Pack. The large pack slips into the resident packs territory, looking to take this land by intimidation...or force. For the last month of Autumn, they hold back and keep on the border line between the 2 lands. Soon enough, Coals first winter arrives, and the rival pack is edging ever closer. His pack challenges the intruders, but their howls betray the packs small size. The intruders know it, and they charge. Their first goal is to destroy the pack by killing the alphas, Ahiga and Tehya, and it's Ahiga that they target first. Ahiga leads them to the edge of the terriory, and disappears in the foliage. Coal could only look on as he watches the shadows catch up to his grandfather. He howls for him, hoping for a clear response, but all he hears out away is a single, solitary yelp. Unfortunatly, Coals patient waiting is only a waste of time, for Ahiga was brutally killed on the spot. Several hours later, all that's left of the pack is Coal, his mother, 2 sisters, his brother, and Tehya. Weeko leads her remaining family to the edges of the turf, for their only hope now is escape. They all lay in wait for Tehya to catch up...but she too will not be coming along. She was badly injured by the rivals, and is too weakened to even stand. She fought hard to protect her family and territory, and so, she passes within it, her grave and spirit forever roaming the trees of her homeland.
