Hephaestion's POV

I saw her from the corner of my eye, the bright blonde hair tied in an elegant bun impossible to miss. I hoped she wouldn't come to me. Maybe if I don't acknowledge her presence she will get the message. But every little piece of hope disappeared when I noticed that she was staring in my direction, with a wicked smirk on her face. I bet she is going to make a scene in front of Y/N.

I rolled my eyes when I felt her near me, asking for a dance.

"I'm sorry but I am a bit busy." I tried to escape.

"Oh, come on. I am sure your...partner doesn't mind." She said.

Y/N was looking slightly unsure but then she accepted.

Y/N's POV

"Are you really going to let Calliope take him? She's competition!" Helen said.

"What do you mean by 'take him'? It's just a dance." I laughed.

"Oh trust me... She wants more than a dance." A few men laughed.

"Who is she?" I asked Helen.

"She is often seen with Hephaestion." She said.

"Like a girlfriend or..." I said.

"She wishes. Hephaestion would never marry her. She is fooling herself thinking that she can make him settle." Helen said. "Honestly, I think that settling Hephaestion down is every Macedonian's woman dream." She laughed.

"Talking about marriage. What are the qualities you are looking for in, let's say, a potential husband?" Cleitus said as he wrapped his arm around my shoulders.

"Sorry to disappoint you but I am not looking for a husband." I said.

"Oh come on. A beautiful woman like you deserves a suitable husband." He continued.

"Like you?" I asked raising my brow.

"Well....I don't want to brag but I am also a general in the army. I fought with courage, I brought pride to my country. And I know I could never beat Hephaestion's gorgeous locks and the way the wind blows through them but trust me, I could give you much more than him." He said and kissed my palm.

"I'll keep that in mind, thanks." I said and looked towards the dance floor hoping that Hephaestion would return soon.

Hephaestion's POV

I was slowly moving on the rhythm of the music and I couldn't stop wishing it was Y/N instead of Calliope. They were completely different. While Calliope's moves were confident and more sensual, Y/N's were feather like. She had a grace which I haven't met in many women before.

"You are not yourself lately." She said.

"Believe me. Right now, I am more myself than I've ever been in the past years." I said, slightly annoyed by her comment.

"I miss you, Hephaestion." She said and leaned her head on my chest. "You ignore everyone since you've met her."

I huffed. "Let's say I make better choices."

"So you regret the time spent with me?" I felt shivers down my spine when she tiptoed and whispered into my ear. "Those nights full of passion. Can she give you that? Is she better than me, Hephaestion?"

"Enough. You are crossing the line, Calliope. I have never promised you anything. You knew that you'll never have me just for yourself."

"She means more to me than you ever did." I continued.
