Chapter 2
A..car accident? I feel my stomach drop, I never had cancer.
"It's impossible, I went to Amsterdam and Augu-"
"It's possible, a semi truck hit your car."
"No, it can't be!" I scream. My head pounds. I put my sore fingers to my temple. It's tender to the touch.
"Could we ask you a few questions?" The doctor asks taking off his surgical mask, revealing a white smile.
"Yeah..I guess." I say.
"Okay,"
Okay.
"Let's start basic, what is your name?" He asks.
"Hazel."
"What's your full name?"
It's the same question Augustus asked me when I first met him.
I take a deep breath, and hold back the tears remembering Gus.
"Hazel Grace Lancaster."
"Good, how old are you?"
"Seventeen."
"Good.." Says the doctor inspecting my eyes.
"What kind of car do you drive?"
"A minivan."
"What color is it?"
"Black."
"Okay, your good with your memory." He says.
"Can I go home?" I ask
"We want to run a few tests." He says.
"Okay."
"Okay." He says.
We stare at each other for a moment.
"Okay, bye." I say.
He waves a hand, and leaves. Just then my parents walk in.
"Hi honey." Says my mother.
"Hi."
"How are you feeling?" She asks.
"I'm fine." Other than the pain throughout every inch of my body.
"Good sweetie."
"Where's my oxygen tank?" I ask.
"Honey what are you talking about?"
"Ok can someone tell me what the hell is going on!" I yell.
"Honey...what do you mean."
"I mean what when I was thirteen they found cancer in my thyroids, and then the damn thing spread to my lungs!" I scream my heartbeat gets faster.
"Honey you never had cancer."
I start to cry, I'm getting overwhelmed, and just wish Augustus was here.
Then I realize, if I didn't have cancer, I didn't have Augustus.
Augustus never existed.
