Surviving

I had them both up with the sun.  There was no real sense of urgency because an hour either way wasn't going to make much difference to the plan.  We were apprehensive about what we had before us and we went through our morning routine quickly.  We just wanted to get to it and get the job done.  We were fed watered and packed up long before I expected us to be.

"Well I suppose there is no point in putting it off," I said with a sigh, "lets get it done."

They murmured their agreement and followed my leading sling their packs on and gearing up.  Our first skirmish was ten feet from the trail leading from our camp.  We were traveling in a tight formation so the two ghouls weren't much trouble.  We found that there were more wondering from the camp than there had been the day before.  We were taking down wandering ghouls every few hundred feet.  As we neared the camp they were getting closer together and the groups got larger.

We couldn't afford to stop and assess and risk a group wandering in from behind us so even if we slowed to look things over we were still moving.  We made our way around to the far side easily enough.  Getting to the fence was more difficult as it seemed a constant stream of ghouls were present.  We raced along the fence killing a few but dodging most.  We came around the corner into a group of them.  I had been afraid we would find the gate locked and have to resort to our guns.  Noise seemed to draw their attention.  It was worse than I feared.

The ghouls behind us had grouped up giving chase in their slow stumbling manner.  The group we ran into was too large to take out quietly and from where we were I could see the lock and chain on the gate.

"Guns," I called to Zeke.

We opened fire while still pushing toward the gate.  I reached it first and shot the lock off.  I turned and kept them off of us while Abby undid the chain and opened up the gate.  We slipped inside and barely got the gate closed before the ghouls were against it.

"stop shooting, back to knives."

While Zeke watched our backs Abby and I got as many as we could through the fence.  After a few minutes I could still see more coming and we were only drawing more attention to ourselves.

"Come on"

We rushed through the outer area to the inner gate which to my surprise was unlocked.  Once inside I used rope to tie the latch and gate so it didn't open up due to some ghoul pressing against it.  We encountered two between the gate and the building but ended up clearing the entire yard while going around the building trying to find an open entrance.  Everything was locked up and I wasn't sure if I was willing to damage a door to get it.  It would leave a vulnerable point in the building.

"Damn, its all locked up." I was frustrated.

"Maybe one of these here have keys." Abby said looking as wild eyed as I felt.

We started searching bodies and found more keys than we could have hoped for or wanted.  The longer we were visible the more attention we attracted.  We would have to check every key to find one that worked and that took time.  Our luck held bad and it took fifteen minutes to find the right key.  By the time we got inside there were a lot of ghouls pushing against the outer fence.  The dozen inside the outer fence were pushed up on the inner fence.

Though we were inside the steel doored, brick walled, and very few window building we couldn't relax yet.

"Stick together," I panted at them, " there are a lot of nooks and crannies in this building.  We will take it slow and do two full trips through before we call it clear."

More mumbled agreement and we pushed off of the wall.  We took our time moving slow enough that we were catching our breath and settling down.  We were on the far side of the building when we finally encountered a ghoul.  He was heavily armed and covered in gore.  he went down easily enough though.  In the next room we found three corpses that had been shot in the head.
