The Happening

Chapter 1

Third Person POV
It's August 16th 1967 in Los Angeles, CA. It's a warm day and school is now back in session. Some people aren't to happy about going back to school but others, mainly the seniors are excited to be back. One group in particular is actually hellbent to make senior year there best year of school. That group is simply known as the clique. Jane, Rita, Eartha, Natalie, and Veronica. There are pretty much the group everyone has something to say about, whether it's good or bad. The girls have been best of friends since freshman year and have grown closer and closer ever since then. But Jane has been keeping the girls out of the loop of something. Over the summer Jane and Montgomery Cliff, a boy notorious for being hard to crack, started dating and well, Jane hasn't told any of the girls. Now Jane will spill the beans and finally tell.

Jane' POV
I'm in the school parking lot, the usually meet up place for us girls. I'm just siting here waiting for them to all finally show up so I can tell them. Yeah the are going to be mad as hell at me for not telling them sooner but they'll get over it and start to berating me. As I'm waiting, I see him. I see Mont get out of James' car and they both start to walk towards the front entrance. God every time I see him I get butterflies in my stomach. He's so fine. As he's walking, he turns and looks my way. I give him a quick wave and he waves back.

"Just who are you waving at Jane?" I hear a voice say. I turn around and see that both Rita and Veronica are in front of me.

"Oh nobody. Both of you guys look really good today", I say trying to change the subject.

"Jane stop playing your games. We saw you looking over towards Montgomery and James. Just don't let Natalie know cause then she'll freak out" Rita says.

"What do you mean she'll freak out?" I say with worry in my voice.

"Oh you don't know, over the summer she spent a lot of time with Jimmy Dean as she likes to call him. She would call me every other day just ranting about him and such. It's as if she's in love with him or something like that." Veronica adds.

"Did she break up with RJ finally?" I ask.

"As far as I know, they are still together. Natalie told me that she had to sneak around RJ and her parents just to hang out with James." Veronica says.

"Are you guys talking about me?" Natalie walks up to them.

"Oh yes, we were just talking about you and your precious Jimmy Dean!" Rita says.

"Stop being loud! RJ and his friends might hear you!" Natalie scolds her.

"Nat, when are you going to break up with him? It's pretty clear that the "love" that was once there is gone." Eartha adds including the quotations.

"Well hello to you too Eartha. I'm glad that you added your two cents in this conversation." Natalie says a bit annoyed.

"Now Jane why did you change the subject? We need to know why you were waving that the unreadable Montgomery Cliff." Rita says.

"Damn you Rita! Exposing me!" I yell.

"Wait a damn minute. What do you mean by exposed? Is there something your not telling us Jane?" Veronica ask.

"You waved at Mont Cliff!" Natalie and Eartha say in sync.

"Oh my goodness! I was going to tell you guys over the summer but Mont wanted to keep it on the hush hush. Me and him started dating." I finally let it out.

"Jane you got to be flipping kidding me! You and Mont Cliff!" Eartha yells. All of the other girls start yelling out questions.

"Ok, ok! I knew that this was going to happen. This is the prime example of why I was holding back. Look now that I told you guys, please don't go up to him and grill him will a million and one questions." I pleaded with the girls.

"Is he already inside the school? Cause if he is, let's go! I just want to say hi!" Eartha says with a laugh.

"Oh hell no! We are not going to do that!" I yell.

"Wait a minute, if he's here then Jimmy's here. Let's go inside! I need to see him!" Natalie exclaimed.

"Nat I got some bad news for you, RJ and he's goons are walking this way." Veronica says.

"Damnit, Robert always has to ruin the moment." Natalie says looking his way.

"Miss Wood, I know you didn't just look my way with out saying hi to me. I mean after all, I am your boyfriend." Robert yells across the parking lot.

"I'm coming RJ honey!" Natalie says in a fake happy voice. "I'll see you girls inside" Natalie says.

"Bye Nat" they all say in sync. "We might as well go in now. I guess" Rita says. We all start walking towards the huge building that is are high school.

Mont's POV
As me and James get out of the car. I see her. My god I hit the mother load. Jane is just stunning. I look as she is waving at me. I give her a quick wave as I see Rita and Veronica walking her way. I turn back to James. He, for once actually looks happy.

"What are you thinking about?" I question him as we walk through the huge double doors of our school.

"It's actually not what but who I'm thinking about". He adds, still smiling.

"Are you thinking about Natalie? Is she still dating RJ's prick ass? I say.

"Sadly yes. She still with him." James says with a bit of anger in his voice.

"Man if I were you, I would convince her that Robert is no good and that she should dump him". I say.

"Natalie is attach to him at the hip it seams like. That would be a hard task to do." James says with disappointment in his voice.

"James, it's very clear that she's pretty much into you based off your personality. Your personality is enough to win her over. Don't you think?" I ask him.

"You make a great point there Mont" he adds.

"Well let's go and get are classes man." I say leading the way towards the office. During lunch is when I'll break the news to him and the rest of the guys that Jane and I are dating.
