Q. "Why do we always want what we cannot have and depreciate the things that we do have?"
A. My thoughts on this is that we often find the things that don't belong to us more appealing because of the simple fact that it isn't ours and human nature's first reaction to situations like this is to get it to please our desires. When we have something already, we lose interest in "the chase" of getting it and the curiosities we once had are now gone so we seek new thrills which in turn causes us to ignore what we have already or lack the appreciation there of. So, I would say the only way this won't happen is if the feelings of acquiring "the chase" is truly genuine and not for temporary pleasure.
Like for an example, watching a movie. We first see the trailer and a rush of excitement comes over us to the point where we may even grow impatient waiting on the debut and after we've watched the full movie to our heart's content we grow dull of seeing the same scenes over and over and we can say what is coming next and then, "the chase" cycle continues.
As you may have figured out by now, this habit we all share not only affect us with our material possessiveness, but also our needs from every person we may meet with the same rules of "the chase" still applying. So, I'll close with this statement. We all need something or someone at one point in time of our lives so don't abuse those moments.
