Equality - poem

Here in the UK our population is expanding,

Yet we lack a basic skill, the skill of understanding

How different we all are, the people in our society,

From different cultures to religions, there’s a mixture and variety.

 -

Despite this great opportunity, we can’t put our differences aside.

We struggle with acceptance, don’t feel no love or pride.

But we have made some progress with recent government policies,

But how much will this change the attitudes towards equality?

-

Would you still stare at two men hand in hand?

Perhaps turn away in disgust, it’s something you withstand.

Well welcome to 2014, the 21st century

It’s time to move on, homophobia’s a distant memory.

-

Maybe the colour of their skin is what makes you judge,

Preconceived ideas are no reason to hold a grudge.

Who cares about their appearance, ethnicity or complexion?

We should look into them as a person; skin colour out of the question.

 -

Gender roles are just as an important right too!

Stereotypes of men and women are something we should review.

Men aren’t always breadwinners, nor are females housewives,

We should all be treated equally, that’s the basic outline.

 -

The discrimination doesn’t end here; it’s by far a bigger problem.

People don’t realise the extent of the issue, from the top to the bottom,

Transvestites and immigrants also get hurled much abuse,

Along with many other people, there is never a good excuse.

 -

So let’s pass judgement and get to know people first,

Think before you speak and give respect like people deserve.

The world would be a better place, much more peaceful and loving,

Divisions would disappear, our disagreements dissolved to nothing.
