Chapter 12
"Do you promise Daniel," a little voice asked, seeming too serious.
"I promise to love you and never abandon you in a time of need, forever and always," the little boy said, still horrified. He watched her eye color change from brown to blue, and her features shift to look more mature. He watched it happen before, but it still frightened him. Even though the changes frightened him, he still loved her with all his heart and he showed it.
"And I promise to love you forever, and keep you by my side no matter how long we live, we will be with each other until the end," she said, her necklace glowing between them. She sliced her left palm, watching Daniel slice his right palm. They pressed their bleeding palms together, sealing their friendship. Her necklace glowed even more, a buzzing sound vibrating off of it as it floated in between them. They closed their eyes, mumbling the spell.
. . .
I woke up curled in Daniel's arms, my cheek pressed against his chest. I fluttered my eyes open, and found Daniel's eyes closed. He slept peacefully, his hand pressed lightly against my waist. His other hand covered mine, resting on his chest.
I pulled my hand up just enough to see my palm. A scar traced my palm diagonally like it always did, but I never knew where it came from. I looked at his palm, seeing the same scar. The dream I awoke from was a memory.
I breathed in deeply, blinking sleep away from my eyes. Daniel woke up at the sound of my breath. He blinked a few times before locking his gaze on me.
"Good morning," he said, his voice gurgled with tiredness.
"Morning," I replied, curling my fingers on his chest. His fingers consumed mine, lightly squeezing my hand.
"How long have you been up," he asked, pressing his lips to my forehead. I felt the urge to reach up and kiss his lips, but resisted.
"Only a few seconds," I replied.
"Good," he replied, shifting himself so I had to sit up. He followed me up, his eyes watching me the entire time. "I don't want to keep you waiting."
"I would have been fine with it," I replied.
"I know," he whispered, setting his hand behind me as his face inched closer to mine. He stopped only inches away, waiting for me to continue. I pulled myself up to him, brushing my lips against his. He closed his mouth around my upper lip as I pulled myself up and wrapped my arms around his neck. I felt safe in his arms, but I also felt the passion he held on to for so long.
"Wow," I said after he pulled away. Our noses pressed together as he smiled, his mouth forming back to mine. I fluttered my eyes closed again, feeling his lips as they pressed against mine.
"Hayo," a voice said and I heard a thump from beside us. I screeched, pulling away from Daniel. When I opened my eyes, a figure stood on the branch in front of us, right above our names. The young boy crouched low with his legs spread wide. He looked about thirteen, and was very jumpy, almost anxious. His evergreen eyes watched us from his perch, and his orange hair and freckles stood out among his leaf and vine clothing. Vines stretched over him from his feet to his neck. A green leaf poked out the side of his head, pointing at his eye. I looked at the orange butterfly wings behind him, and guessed he was a fairy. "...'ello there!"
"Who are you," I asked, completely out of breath. I looked over at Dan, who seemed just as shocked as me.
"I'm Wesley," he replied, opening his wings and wiggling his eyebrows. "But everyone calls me Puck."
