Chapter 2
Aleator stumbled into the passenger seat of the car. Large sunglasses protected his eyes from the glare of the sun and acted as a safety barrier in which he could hide behind.
His dad started the engine and turned to his son, "Take those stupid glasses off," he ordered.
"I really don't think that's a good idea," retorted Aleator.
His dad sighed. His son was always so diificult and stubborn, there was no point left in arguing. "Do what you want. I give up."
Aleator tried to focus his mind again to prepare himself for his exam. He couldn't remember what it was going to be about, but he didn't care. If he failed, he could just retake the year. They always gave him special treatment because of the high esteem that his father held. Besides, he never asked for this, it was just thrust upon him.
"Listen up son," his father said as they turned the corner, "today is really important. You cannot mess this up. It's..."
The rest of his father's words were tuned out. Aleator didn't need another lecture, he couldn't take it, especially not today in the state that he was in. So, he just decided to nod, whilst he closed his eyes behind his sunglasses.
They finally reached the academy, whose high golden gates seemed to reach for the heavens. Upon each gate was the name of the academy: Alaria, and beside them stood tall pillars with winged statues perched upon them.
With a final wish of good luck from his father, Aleator who had slightly sobered up, got out of the car and approached the gates. He placed his palm upon the harp-shaped seal, opening up the gates and allowing him to enter.
As soon as he had entered the academy building, he heard his name being called. He didn't have to turn around to know who it was. "Grace," he smiled at her, "I'm so glad you're here. I don't know where I'm supposed to be."
She locked arms with him, "You're lucky to have me as a girlfriend then."
Grace led him to the examination hall and showed him to his seat, "Good luck," she wished him before leaving a kiss upon his cheek.
There were three minutes before the exam would begin when a shrill voice sliced through the air, "Aleator please remove your sunglasses immediately." The invigilator approached his desk and waited for Aleator to hand his sunglasses over.
It took a moment for the instruction to be processed in his hazy head. Aleator removed the glasses and handed them over to the tight-lipped woman, but not before flashing her a charming smile.
"Nice try, but it's not going to work," she said in a monotone.
Just as she turned to leave, Aleator felt a sudden urge to vomit, but he really did not want to do that at this moment in time. He tried his best to resist the urge, and missed the instructions that the invigilator gave out. By the time, he was able to control himself again, all he found was a plain piece of paper on his desk.
The timer had started. The exam had begun.
His first thought was: what in heavens?
No, scratch that - WHAT THE HELL!?
