Aleator flew across the skies towards the sounds of chiming bells. At the back of his mind, he couldn't stop worrying about baby Silvia - would she be safe? Would anyone answer the door?
In the distance, he could see the tips of the towers at the academy. He strained his ears to focus on where exactly the bells were coming from, and all signs were pointing to his dad's office.
Aleator groaned. He really couldn't face the full wrath of his father right now.
The chiming bells rang even louder and Aleator urged his wings to fly faster.
Once he arrived at the office, he lowered himself to the ground and allowed his wings to fold back into place. He knocked on the door with the sign saying PRINCIPAL and waited for a response.
The bell stopped ringing, and the door opened.
"Come in," said his father.
Aleator pushed open the door and immediately his attention went, not to his father, but to a beautiful woman with very long legs perched upon a leather chair.
"I did not think I would be meeting you so early," said the woman as she uncrossed her legs to stand up. She sauntered over to him and held out her hand.
Aleator shook her hand, confused as to who she was.
"People call me Chance," she said as she flipped her long golden hair back over her bare shoulders. The woman was wearing a white dress that reached the ground, but stopped short above her chest. "And no need to introduce yourself. I already know who you are, Aleator." She licked her red lips.
"Please take a seat, both of you," said his father.
Aleator did as he was told, he fiddled with the collar of his shirt. Slightly uncomfortable from the stares from the woman, Aleator turned his chair so it was facing away from her. The heat rushed to his cheeks as he could feel her gaze going up and down his body. She must have been at least ten years older than him.
Chance took her time to sit down, and as she did so, she edged her chair closer to his.
Out of sheer politeness, Aleator chose to say nothing.
"You must be wondering why I've called you here son," began his father. Aleator nodded, trying not to be distracted by the woman who had managed to edge her shoes close enough to touch his leg.
Aleator pretended to cough and moved his legs away from her.
She smirked.
"This has something to do with your charge," said his father. Aleator sat up straight. His father gestured towards Chance to continue explaining.
Chance took the opportunity to swerve Aleator's chair towards her. "Usually I meet new guardian angels much later in their careers, it's not very common to have one slip up so soon. I really didn't expect the son of the principal of the academy to be someone that I would have the honour of meeting for a very long time," she said.
Aleator frowned at this. He knew he had made a total fool out of himself and he had messed up, he didn't need to be reminded of the fact.
"Can you cut to the chase please? What exactly are you trying to tell me?" he said, rather unpolitely. But he didn't care. Chance was really starting to get on his nerves. "Am I being expelled from the academy? Do I have to retake a year? WHAT?"
A harsh screech sounded as Aleator stood up and his chair scraped across the wooden floor.
Chance arched her perfect eyebrow and waited for him to calm down again. His father narrowed his eyes and shook his head, "Sit down. You are not being expelled. You passed your exams, and as badly as you mucked up that last one - it wasn't an exam. It was your first task."
"Do you mean, I really wrote her destiny? But I didn't even know what I was doing! I wrote damn squiggles for her life - what the heck will that do to her?" Aleator pulled at his hair. "Is there no way out of this, can't she have another guardian angel?"
"NO," his father said rather quickly.
Chance wrapped her long fingers around Aleator's chin and pulled it towards her. "You are a fully qualified guardian angel. Now your charge has run into a moment in her life which requires a bit of luck, I dare say."
Aleator wrinkled his forehead, "What do you mean?"
"She's in an orphanage now isn't she? You want her to get adopted by some good parents, don't you?"
Aleator nodded, "I want her to have a good life."
"Well then, I invite you to play a game of Chance," she said, and in her hand, she threw up several dice into the air.
