Chapter 1 - Ivory

I walked down the sidewalk in the direction towards my town. Summer was here, and I could relax without being knowingly shunned by my so-called "peers" at the prison known as school, and perhaps my foster family. I couldn't really tell with them.

I sighed nonchalantly, trying to forget the tragedy that happened to me two years ago. It was hard to erase the event; sometimes I would get flashes of the past, and it'd make it hard to concentrate on whatever I was doing.

The blue sky was dotted with white, fluffy clouds here and there, and birds chirped merrily from the trees that were planted in front of some buildings and stores in town. I walked aimlessly into a bookstore, my eyes glazed and wistful as thoughts roamed my brain.

What would it be like if I could travel back in time and see my real parents? Just one last time..? Or if I could go back and wonder what my life was like before I was adopted... I was truly on a roller coaster going down. Down into hell.

I was snapped out of my thoughts by a tap on my shoulder. An employee stood behind me, smiling pleasantly. "Hello, ma'am. Might I interest you in a new shipment?" He wore a well-tailored suit, and dark hair was combed neatly.

He was incredibly skinny, but I wasn't one to judge. Normal is very hard to find in Britain. "Yes, please," I say politely, and he gestured for me to follow him. Opening a door at the back of the room, we walked down a long spiral staircase, eventually reaching the bottom.

He led me into a library-type room. A cloud of dust greeted us as he opened the creaking old door. I coughed a bit, and tried to keep up with him as he led me all the way back to the furthest corner of the ancient library. How ironic that there's a library inside of a bookstore.

He picked through a few books, his eyes laced with concentration. "Ah! Here ya go!" A scrappy old book was handed to me. He grinned as I leafed and skimmed through it. The title said "Time Travel".

"If you need any more book recommendations, I'm the guy," he winked, then led me out of the library and up the stairs. My eyes were fixated on the cover; I could hardly breath as I followed. How could he know?

I snapped out of my trance as I realized he was looking at me expectantly. He had asked me a question. "Oh! Um, come again?" I sheepishly murmured, a faint heat rising to my cheeks, and the book fell out of my hands. I'm such a klutz.

"What's your name? I'm Adrian Black."

"Ivory. Ivory Clark," I replied, scooping the book off the ground.

I narrowed my eyes, as I thought I saw a flash of recognition flicker through his dark brown eyes, but it quickly vanished. Huh. "Cool name," he grinned, tilting his head a bit to the left, which made a bit of hair fall into his eyes.

"Thank. Yours too." I let a shy smile take over my lips, casually conversing with him. By the time I checked my watch, I had been there for some twenty minutes. "Oh! I'm very sorry, but I have to go." I fumbled with my purse, stopping when his hand rested on my arm.

"It's fine," Adrian said. "I'll pay for it. Anything for a new friend." Friend? Well, sir, if you say so, some of us just like to read. I mentally giggled at the song lyrics that had popped into my head, hugging the ratty old book to my chest.

"Well, thanks, then. I'll have to come back some time," I said to him, slinging the purse back over my shoulder. I absentmindedly opened the glass door and walked back out into the glaring sun, already immersed in the book that told of faraway places and times.

Adrian watched Ivory's retreating figure hurry out of the bookstore. "Time travel indeed.. You will most certainly like that book, Ivory." A dark chuckle was emitted from his lips. He was rather rudely interrupted, however, by the feeling of a cold circle on his neck.

"And why would that be?"

Hello, everyone! I am Lieu, and my friend who I'm co-writing this with is Ivory. They aren't our real names, of course, but you can call us that. We're sorry for how tiny this chapter is, but the others will hopefully be a bit longer, so please bear with us.

We want 5 votes and- Ha, no. We don't do that. Probably. Anyway, Burnt Skies should be updated around once a week (we're not counting the days). Thank you for reading!
