I stared wistfully at the girl at the front of the class. Her hair was dark brown, like mine, but it fell down her back in a long, messy plait. She had freckles and brown eyes and a beautiful smile. Her name was Josephine, and she was beautiful.
I often wished I could hear her voice and how she played the piano. Everyone seemed to clap whenever she played, so I guessed it was good, perhaps even excellent. Whenever I got up to play the piano, people laughed. I only managed a few bars of easy pieces, pieces for beginners. I was no beginner to the piano, but the lack of hearing made it seem that all. They all would laugh. All except Josephine. She just smiled a small smile all the way through. That made me smile.
I couldn't even remember what the piano sounded like.
I wished I could, I had loved it when I was fourteen.
