12: The Second Bonfire

A gentle knocking noise filled the silence of the Homestead. My eyes caught a glimpse of blonde hair entering the room as I sat on my hammock. I didn't mind having to share a room with the boys in the Glade, I didn't think I was important enough to get my own room. My legs swung back and forth as Newt came closer to me.

"What happened? You kinda just left out of no where." He asked. I shrugged, letting out a sigh. "Something to do with your memories?" He watched as I fidgeted with my hands in my lap. I felt uncomfortable under his intense gaze. Suddenly, his fingers grasped my chin and tilted my head so I was staring back at him. "Come on, you know you can tell me, Cas."

I blushed, trying to look anywhere but his eyes or lips. He awkwardly let go of my chin as I took out my notepad. "It's my brother. I know he's out there somewhere." Newt gave me a sympathetic look, reaching out to hold my hand. My heart hurt, knowing how close the two of us were originally.

"We'll find him, love." He said with a cute smile, his thumb now rubbing circles into the back of my hand. I bit my lips, growing more nervous. "I-uh, I need to tell you something, and I just want you to listen okay?" The boy stuttered out. Man, he's adorable. I blinked, waiting for him to continue. "Well, uh, ever since you came up in the box I-"

"Hey, you two slintheads slacking off in here?!" Gally burst into the room in annoyance. His expression turned to one of surprise and a sly smirk took over his features. "Well, well, well. You finally gonna tell the shank how you feel, huh?" The tall Glader leaned against the wall, getting comfy. "Go on then, continue."

My brows furrowed in confusion and I looked back to Newt, who was now glaring at Gally. "Get out, Gally." He gritted his teeth. An awkward tension began to fill the room and I knew that I needed to leave. Getting up quietly, I walked to the doorway and pushed past Gally. The two boys began to argue as soon as I left, and I shook my head with a small smile.

"Castoria!" Chuck called happily, glad to see me out in the Glade. "How are you feeling?" I beamed at him, ruffling his hair. "That's good. Don't forget that we're gonna have a bonfire for Thomas tonight!"

Right, I had completely forgot about that!

"Anyway, I'll see you around!" The boy said before jogging over to the greenie. I watched the two for a moment, silently chuckling as Chuck pestered Thomas. Wondering back to the Gardens, I began to think about my previous life. What were my interests? What skills did I have?

My calloused hands laid down fertilizer as the heat began to bother me. "Tori! Come here!" I didn't even think about who's voice it was, I just automatically got up and walked over. Gally was stood with his arms crossed. I immediately rolled my eyes and brushed past him, not wanting to deal with him right now. "Seriously? Tori!" The boy's voice called after me. With a sigh, I threw my middle finger up in the air as a signal for him to leave me alone.

About 5 minutes later, I heard a bunch of commotion outside. Jogging out of the Homestead, I spot the Gladers near the opening on the Maze. Thomas was getting up off the ground and the others were attempting to calm him down.

"Just calm down, all right?" I could hear Newt say.

"No okay? Why won't you tell me what's out there?" Thomas argued back as I neared the group. I slowed my pace as Alby explained that it was for protection. I came to a stop next to Newt, listening to the conversation.

"You guys can't just keep me here."

"I can't let you leave." Alby stated, holding his hand up to calm the Greenie.

"Why not?" Just then, the walls began groaning and rumbling as the doors started to close. We all watched casually while Thomas' mouth hung open in shock. I shielded my eyes with my arm as dust blew out of the opening. "What the hell?"
