Draco
The next few weeks were some of the best in Draco's memory. His father was leaving him alone for once in his life, the dark mark branded on his arm hadn't hurt in days, and best of all, though he tried not to think it near Snape, was Saturday afternoons with Hermione Granger.
Not that he'd ever admit it. Something about the way that she did everything with an easy smile just made her attractive. He also liked himself better when he was with her. He left the tough rich boy disguise and let his real, soft side emerge.
Of course he wasn't one of those nancy boys who just find beauty in everyone. He was still a Malfoy for crying out loud. He just wasn't as mean. He could tell that Granger was different than in class with him as well.
Now, sitting there in the Slytherin common room he was constantly battling with one thing that had been on his mind, well two. One was quidditch. Beating Potter and Weasley was more important to him now. He felt like he had to prove himself even more than usual. He had been taking time to train even more lately, flying on weekends without quidditch prqctice from morning until night. But why?
A small voice in the back of his head whispered the answer "To show HER that you're better than them." But he ignored it.
The other thing that bothered him was his task set by the Dark Lord. He had to kill Dumbledore. He would be admired and he'd never liked Dumbledore anyway. But killing someone was a scary thought. He had been working on one plan over and over in his mind. He just had to find out where the vanishing cabinet was.
As his mind strained to remember any details, however, all of his thoughts strayed to what G-Hermione would think. "Might as well use her real name, she used yours," he muttered to himself feeling oddly happy as he remembered her lips forming his name, Draco....
"Draco! Hello? Are you alive??!!!" Fingers snapped infront of his nose and he lost his train of thought as Pansy Parkinson's face came into focus. "What is it?" He snarled, angrily. What if he had said his thoughts out loud? Pansy cleared her throat.
"Well, it's November now, and I just wanted to tell you that you should get a grip." Draco stood up to get his bags (he was going to make it obvious he didn't want to talk to her, but not seem like he noticed.) "And what's that supposed to mean?" He asked casually swinging the bag over his shoulder. "It means that it's almost the first Hogsmead trip, and your going to look foolish going with nobody. I was thinking-" "I already know what you're thinking Pansy!" Draco snarled. "And my answer's still the same."
He'd had enough of her. Enough of the endless hints and attempts to get him to like her. 6 whole years of it, ever since they had been introduced by their parents a year before hogwarts started.
He took a long stride towards the dormitories, but Pansy stepped right in front of him. She spoke again, this time her voice contorted with anger,"Listen Draco, I've helped you with your schoolwork, lied for you, cheated for you, what more can I do? The least YOU can do is take me to Hogsmead!!!" "But the school will think I'm going out with you!" "That's the point!" Pansy shouted.
There was an awkward silence. Draco noticed a circle of slytherins had formed around them, as they do during the frequent fights in the common room, and students taking bets about what would happen.
"Pansy, you said this should be a favour after all you've done for me, but I never asked you to. And you checking my school work is the thing that made me fail Transfiguration, though I kind of thank you for that." "And why would that be Malfoy?" She spat out his name venomously,"I know for a fact that your father wants you to have a girlfriend by Easter break! How are you going to do that if you don't even like anybody?!"
She stared at him, her eyes filled with anger and betrayal. "I will do as my father asks, as you said. But you were wrong, I do like somebody, it's just not you!" It had slipped out before Draco could stop himself. He looked around at the stunned faces and ran to his dormitory.
He grabbed the mirror inside and looked at himself. Pathetic. His hair would never be bright like Weasley's or his grey eyes bright like Potter's. Why would she like him?
And then he realized that to have these thoughts and to have said those things to Pansy, he'd have to admit something to himself he'd been denting for weeks.
He,
Draco
Malfoy
Was
Falling
For
Hermione
Granger.
