Hermione

Ron was staring at her and suddenly, she felt self conscious. He was dense, but he'd noticed her hair right away. Suddenly, Harry came through the portrait hole to the common room. "Snape made me sort rotten flobberworms from good ones, without gloves! Do you know how disgusting that is? And I still have to do that stupid transfiguration homework! You'd think it was OWL year again." Hermione squirmed internally at the thought of transfiguration. She hadn't told them about Malfoy. The first lesson was this Saturday in McGonagall's classroom. They'd probably go bonkers if they knew. But she'd have to tell them eventually.  "Harry," Ron interrupted her thoughts,"did you know about Hermione's hair. She's changed it." Harry glanced at Hermione, but he seemed preoccupied at staring at Ginny. Ginny glanced at Harry and he looked away, his cheeks pink.

Hermione raised her eyebrow at him but was interrupted by the Gryffindor seventh year, Cormac McClaggan. "Hey Hermione, are you going to Slughorn's party with anyone?" The potions master, Proffesor Slughorn,  had invited a bunch of selected students to a party in December. As it was the end of September, she hadn't given much thought to it, but McClaggan just didn't give up. He'd asked every week for almost month, and she had rejected him every single time. "C'mon McClaggan," one of his friends grabbed him and took him to a table in the corner.

Ron's expression turned stony and he snapped at Hermione,"Are you going to go with him, then?" Harry was walking over to Katy Bell, Angelina Johnson, and Ginny to discuss an idea on the chaser lineup. Hermione looked at Ron exasperated. "If I've rejected him this many times, is it likely I'd say yes now? Think Ronald!" Ron looked sheepish and then asked,"Well who are you going with then?" Hermione suddenly found the chairs in the common room very interesting. "I was actually going to ask you......you know.....just as friends..." She muttered. Ron's face turned as maroon as his pajamas. Hermione got up and walked into her dormitory, leaving Ron to finish his homework with a grin on his face.

The week went by fast. Almost too fast. It was finally Saturday, the day she had been dreading. Ron and Harry were under the tree closest to the lake to finish their homework. "You coming Hermione?" Ron asked, hopefully. "Ya, c'mon Hermione!  I don't get how to start this potions essay." Harry said. She was instantly annoyed at them. Harry had found a potions book that soon had him at the top of the class. "Well why can't that book help you?" She shot at him. Harry rolled his eyes at her and Ron sighed,"C'mon Harry. She's only mad because that's the one class she's not the top of." Harry grinned at her and followed Ron out to the lake.

It took her almost 10 minutes to get to the empty transfiguration classroom because Peeves the Poltergeist had decided to set off dung bombs in the quickest way there.

Hermione set her bookbag on the desk, and realized she didn't know what teach him. She decided on vanishing spells, as he can't have learned much due to his lateness. "Acio McGonagall's mice!" Hermione cast the spell and was rewarded the the exact mice they had practiced on. Suddenly, there was a knock on the door, and she felt apprehensive as she opened the door.

There he was. The pale pointed face and light blonde hair of the Slytherin she hated. " Well well well, Granger Already got lessons planned?

Bet you've been planning all week doing what McGonagall told you." He smirked and walked lazily into the classroom. Hermione shot him a seetging look, and began to talk like he hadn't said a word. "Proffesor McGonagall just finished vanishing spells, but you came in late so you missed the wand movement, so I thought we'd start with that." Draco nodded curtly, an unusual act of submission from him, and took a mouse from the tray. " Okay," Hermione started, rathed lamely,"The spell is Evenesco." She demonstrated on the mouse in front of her, and with a flicker of pride, she saw it vanish completely. Malfoy sighed then looked out the window, as if he'd rather be out there. She couldn't blame him, but she'd promised Proffesor McGonagall she'd try. "Malfoy, I don't want to be here any more than you do, but you have to try." He glared at her, and evidently couldn't think of a good comeback, and tried the spell. "Evenesco!" He waved his wand in such a weird way that Hermione couldn't stop herself, she burst out laughing.  Draco looked livid and she tried to contain herself. "It's - it's the way y-you're moving your wand," Hermione choked out, still laughing so hard there were tears in her eyes. "I didn't know mudbloods could laugh," he smirked as she stopped laughing abruptly, but her confidence wasn't wavered. "At least I can manage a simple vanashing spell." Draco decided to ignore that jibe and asked in a constricted voice,"Well, Granger.  How do you move you wond when vanishing a mouse, if your such a know-it-all." She ignored the last part and showed the movement. He tried to mimick it but failed dismally again. "Draco," he looked suprised as Hermione adressed him by his first name, but allowed her to continue,"You're flourishing your wand too much, it has to look like this." She demonstrated again, but he was still putting too much emphasis on the flourish at the end.  Hermione couldn't help herself, it was so easy! She grabbed Draco's wrist and forced it into the motion. Her hand reacted before her mind did, pulling away so fast, it was as if she'd just touched a blast-ended scroot. She couldn't believe it, she'd just touched the scumbag Draco Malfoy's wrist. She couldn't believe what she had just done.

Draco's POV

She'd touched him, the mudblood had put her hands on his wrist. He could see the fear and disgust on her face, but strangely, he didn't flinch the way he did when anyone touched him. He was stunned, not by what happend, but what he smelled. It was an amazing smell of jasmine and roses and...no. This couldn't be. Not Granger. He had to find out though.

"Oy, Granger," he said in a low voice. She turned around with an apologetic yet determined look on her face. "You made me do it. That was the most aggravating moment of my life. It's so easy!" She didn't seem to want to talk anymore, and Draco told himself it was probably a common perfume among witches. This time, grabbed his wand, and moved it as Hermione had, and muttered "Evenesco!" To his utter disbelief, the mouse vanished completely. She looked proud at being successful at teaching but she still apologized,"I'm sorry Malfoy." Something had changed, something crucial, something he couldn't ignore. He found himself looking at her features: her light brown eyes, her nose, but stopped before her lips. He was Draco Malfoy. "Forget it." He said, trying not to look at her as he picked up his books. " Thanks....Granger." With that, he strode out of the classroom and down to the Dungeons, to the Slytherin common room. His usual group called to him, but he waved them off with the excuse of "Homework. I can't afford another detention." They smirked and left him to it, as he'd expected. Slytherins were not the type to help other people. For the rest of the time until dinner, he only practiced vanishing things; He could always summon them back if they were important. But no amount of practice could get the tingling sensation from where Hermione had touched his wrist, and he couldn't shake the thought,  no matter how wrong he knew that was. And when he fell asleep in his four poster bed with Slytherin hangings, he found that he couldn't push her from his mind, no matter how hard he tried.
