Hermione
Hermione had butterflies in her stomach and they wouldn't go away. That morning, Proffesor McGonagall's class would be recieving their grades on a paper that was almost 50% of that semester's grade. Ron gave her a reassuring smile, his eyes lingering on hers. She sucked in air uncomfortably and looked away.
Professor McGonagall walked to her desk and gave a proud smile as she handed the paper to her. "Ms. Granger, I am very pleased to announce that once again you presented a stunning, detailed essay." She then turned and spoke to the rest of the class, "Ms. Granger didn't just earn an Outstanding and full marks. Miranda Gawshawk, the author of the Standard Book of Spells academic series, has requested to include this essay in one of her upcoming books." Loud applause followed with whoops from Ron and Harry.
After things settled down, papers continued to be passed out and Professor McGonagall allowed her class to talk.
"Nice one, Hermione!" Harry said. Ron smiled at her and jokingly added,"I always knew you were good, but now it seems Harry isn't the only celebrity. Would you like me to shine your shoes or fetch you tea on a silver platter?" Hermione laughed and punched him playfully in the shoulder. "Knock it off, Ron. It's not a big deal. What did you get on your paper anyway?" Ron threw up his fist, Breakfast Club style. "I got an Exceeds Expectations! I didn't believe it at first. Blimey, I'll be getting published next Hermione. You better watch your back." He turned to Harry, who was looking out the window, and said, "C'mon, mate. Your turn. What did you get?" Harry replied, "Same as you," without taking his eyes off of whatever was outside. "Oi! Harry!" Ron snapped his fingers in front of Harry's nose. Harry turned pink and looked hurridly at Ron. "Y-yeah sorry." Ron proceeded to talk tactics about the upcoming Quidditch match.
God, he was really dense, Hermione thought. Ron didn't look through the window, but if he had he would've seen that the object of Harry's attention happened to have the same ginger hair and Weasley smile.
Hermione smirked (a habit that must've rubbed off on her from Draco) and let her mind wander to plans for that Saturday's lesson. She had just thought up the final part planned, when none other than the guy she had plans with walked up to Harry, Ron and her. He put on his signature smirk and said,
"Well, well, well. Potter and Weasel King are trying to think of a way to beat Slytherin. You might as well give up now, you can't defeat us." Harry and Ron both glared at him.
"Slytherin doesn't stand a chance, Malfoy. Harry's captain now and he knows all your old tricks." Ron retorted. Hermione watched as Draco made an incredulous face and shook his head.
That's when he caught sight of Hermione. His eyes contracted with something-fear- but only for a moment. His face then softened into the expression he only wore when he was with her. Relaxed, the shadow of a smile creeped towards his pink lips......... Hermione felt butterflies again, but this time they were their because of a very different reason. She noticed his gorgeous grey eyes that had an unusual warmth in them as he stared into her brown ones.
A moment caught up in them feels like an eternity, thought Hermione. She found she was unable to stem the flow and direction her thoughts were taking. You must be calm and collected! She told herself, for she feared the smile she was fighting now would soon break free.
Draco seemed to be thinking the same thing, and soon the smirk was firmly set back in place. "What do you think, Granger? Is your boyfriend here going to be a Gryffindor hero? Or will Weasel King keep up his streak of losing?" Draco asked as he leaned towards her, against the desk. She could feel the blush seeping into her cheeks, but she knew she could handle Ma-Draco. That was going to take some getting used to.
"What do you think Malfoy?" She, like him thought it would be best to use their usual 'formal' names for each other when not in lessons. Any other name might arouse a suspicion that would lead to uncomfortable questions. "Of course Gryffindor will win. Tell me, in any of your teams' bragging, is there any speck of actual skill?"
Harry and Ron were speechless. Draco looked like she had punched him in the face. "Of course there's skill," he muttered, his eyes on the floor. Hermione's panicked anger (most likely brought on by a certain 'boyfriend' reference), left her at once. She started to wonder if she had gone to far. Unfortunately, Ron decided to seize this chance to demoralize Draco even further. "Ha!" he sneered, "I knew you just bought your way on. Is your death eater father still paying your way then? I didn't know the allowed outside contact from Azkaban, but he must be because I've seen you play. Hermione's right. You're absolute rubbish!" "Ron, I never said-" Hermione started, but she was interrupted by Draco.
"Despite what you think, Weasley, we do work hard. We do have a chance, no, more than a chance against you." And with that, he strode out of the classroom just as the bell sounded for lunchtime.
"Ron, that wasn't what I meant at all. You know it wasn't." Hermione said accusingly as they packed up their things. "Yeah, but it's only Malfoy, Hermione. It's not like he's ever been kind to any of us." Ron retorted. Hermione turned to face him and decided she didn't like Ron when he was competitive and showing off. "Yes, but even Malfoy must have feelings. He might not be all money, you know. What you said was just awful." She left Ron looking stunned and confused and left to go to the common room.
She was just walking down the 6th floor corridor, when she heard a sound coming from one of the empty classrooms. She listened against the door and heard the sound again.
It was crying. Heart-wrenching, and almost sobbing, the person in the classroom seemed to have known this was the only time to let it go, as most people were in the Great Hall for lunch. She hesitated before she opened the door, hoping she wouldn't get yelled at. What she saw when she did shocked her.
It was Draco. She knew before she saw his whole being because his platinum blonde hair was just visible under a row of desks. He was making a sound that made her cautious to approach him, for she was fearful of what she'd find. Hermione finally walked past the row of desks (she saw an open letter on one of them, but ignored it) and looked at the sight in front of her.
He was lying on the ground on his side and he was clutching his left arm, holding it to his chest. His eyes were squeezed shut and he looked as if he was in terrible pain. His mouth was quivering, letting out the sobs that had led Hermione to him. Hermione hurried to his side and desperately tried to get through to him.
"Draco," she whispered, it was barely audible. "Draco," her voice sounded surer this time,"Draco, you need to breathe. It's all right. It's all right. Just breathe, please." His crying had stopped abruptly, though his eyes were still closed. He drew a shaky breath and she sighed in relief. She kept speaking to him, comforting things and apologizing for what she and Ron had said, hoping he'd open his eyes.
She took his cold hand in her warm ones and pleaded,"Open your eyes.......please. You don't have to talk to me, Draco, just look at me so I know your okay." He refused her request. She sighed, annoyed and stood up. "Your just being subborn now Draco! If you won't look at me then you'll HAVE to talk to me! If your not okay then I'm going to find Madam Pomfrey and bring her up here." No response. She stamped her foot at his stubbornness and walked to the door. She had just grabbed the golden handle, when the voice she had been waiting for spoke aloud.
"Granger, did you just stamp your foot at me?"
