"Don't worry about messing up, it's not being broadcasted live."
Crowe had accurately guessed your thoughts as you were eyeing the few helicopters accompanying your aircraft, equipped with cameras and microphones. That Crowe, who had become like the sister you never had to you, was one of the chosen Glaives to go on this first mission with you, was one of the facts you were unbelievably grateful for.
"They want a perfect performance to show to the public, so if any Glaives makes a mistake, it's cut out immediately. And all of that only so the people continue to happily pay their taxes to DARWiN."
You took a look over your shoulder and examined the guys securing the huge bags filled with tons of white feathers. Just as Nyx had told you that day he broke into your apartment, all this effort was only for marketing reasons.
"It's maquabre", you bit back a harsh laugh. Even if people's lives were at stake, the most important thing for the higher-ups was still money. Nothing in this world had changed since the Skotáds had started appearing, money and power were still the dominant reason for people's actions, the same was true for the organisation you were now a part of. One that was only interested in those two rewards.
No, that wasn't true, you corrected yourself, the organisation had not only those intentions. With a common enemy, most of the wars between humans had been abandoned, which was one of the few things left that you still regarded DARWiN for achieving. To unite the human race.
Your thoughts about morality were soon pushed from your mind, as in the distance, you could see smoke. You were close. Goose bumps arose on your skin, you could vividly remember your last encounter with one of these monsters. But this time, it was different, this time, you had the capability to fight. Still, you were nervous as hell. Despite all your training, all the lessons about Skotáds, all the praise from Cor, you still doubted your ability to really take them down. Your heartbeat quickened and you broke into cold sweat, thankfully you could at least control your muscles, so you didn't tremble.
Then you saw the first one. It was huge, even bigger than the one you encountered weeks ago, its head reaching over the houses nearby. There was not that much destruction, it seemed you had arrived early enough to be able to prevent the worst.
"There are three of them", Elynoir said, having checked out the area with binoculars.
"All right, let's get to work!" Nyx stretched his muscles in an attempt to warm up for the coming fight. You began mentally preparing yourself as the helicopter got closer to the monsters.
You got closer and closer to the huge one. Then it was time to jump, and thus, time to forget your nervousness and start concentrating on the fight. Crowe gently squeezed your shoulder one last time before she walked to the edge of the platform, next to Nyx, Elynoir, and Libertus. You followed her.
While waiting for the command to jump, you carefully examined the huge one, searching for the area its core was located, indicated by the most black liquid dripping from there. Alongside with the others, you froze as you noticed that this Skotáds weak spot was in its throat, too high for you to reach from the floor.
"How are we gonna reach that?", you asked, the other immediately knew what you were talking about.
"We have to bring it down somehow", Libertus answered. "Leave it to Elynoir to come up with strategies, she's a genius!"
You looked at said Glaive, who had already picked up a steel rope from inside the helicopter.
"We have to trip it", she answered the question. "But first of all, try to make as much damage as possible."
