So I just now thought of this while running around Poni Island to hatch the egg I got from the Nursery and running into a battle with Wimpod.
When you go into battle with an Egg in your party, it shows up as an empty slot, right?
So
If we think back to Generation I here
Isn't it theoretically possible that the rival in Red/Blue could have moved his Raticate to a box in the PC in order to hatch an Egg, which would later turn out to be one of the Pokémon to end up on his final team?

I'm such a child on there about it it's fucking great

My Chikorita is probably at like level 11 at this point
