"harold? can you hear me?" curtis blurted out. he was holding back tears, he was a solider, he shouldn't be crying. but harold was on the bloody, sandy ground beneath him, bleeding out.
harold's weak arm wrapped weakly around his waist. he gently tugged curtis towards him. "we can't" curtis whispered. there was soldiers all around them, they would get caught.
an explosion sounded in the distance and curtis' arms went around his head and his body over harold's to protect him on instinct. "i have to get you out of here, now." curtis said in a rush, grabbing harold's arm. harold groaned painfully in response.
"no..." harold said quietly. "...i can't. just go, save yourself, save the others" he said, pushing a teary-eyed curtis away from him. harold didn't plan on his last words being a lie, but they were. "i love you, curtis"
harold's once bright electric blue eyes went dull as his strong muscular body went limp on the sand beneath him.
