Nothing a Mary-Sue does has negative consequences. They do whatever it is another character is telling them not to do since it'll make things worse, and oh! They end up defeating the villain by doing what the character told them would kill everyone else and nothing bad happens to any of them, except for the villain.

Characters might need to win some, but they DEFINITELY need to lose a lot. They need to have to put all that they care about on the line to defeat the villain, accomplish the mission, reach the end of their quest, etc. If they don't lose anything, what's the point?
