Chapter 2

"C'mon, Ivy!" Bella yelled from the end of the courtyard. "Hold on, Bella."

"When Mallory gets here just ignore him. Keep talking to me. Act like you never even saw him, okay?" she said in a rush as Mallory approached. "Why?" I asked. She waved her hand dismissively. "Here he comes," she whispered.

Weird.

"What did you do yesterday after school?" she asked me, sounding way too enthusiastic for such a simple question. I pretended to think long and hard about it. "Does ordering in count?" I asked. She gave me an incredulous look. "No." She huffed impatiently. "Well, I got new makeup yesterday. I'm wearing the coral color. Isn't it so pretty?" She closed her eyes and leaned in closer to me so that I could get a better look. Mallory sat down next me and immediately took a bite from his sandwich. "I don't get it," he said, causing crumbs to fly everywhere. "Why do girls put all that junk on their face?"

I know that Bella said to ignore him, but with a question like that I just couldn't help myself. I turned to him and was about to give him the longest, most wearisome speech on why exactly girls wear makeup, but he started talking again. "In my opinion girls are prettiest when they step out of the shower-"

"Gross!" Bella and I said at the same time.

"No not like that, God!" he said defensively. "I just meant that she's so clean and fresh..." he got a faraway look on his face. "Stop drooling, Mallory," I stage whispered. Bella stole a glance at Mallory and immediately blushed. When Bella wasn't looking, Mallory gave me an incredulous look. "Um... I have to help Emilie with some homework. See you guys later." Bella left in a rush. What was that about? She had this whole plan not to talk to Mallory and then she just leaves?

After she was out of hearing range, Mallory asked me, "Do you thinks she still likes me?" I almost said "Duh!" but instead I said, "Don't know." After an awkward pause of silence I asked him, "So you really think makeup is useless?" he took another bite of his sandwich and got a philosophical look on his face. "Well, some girls need it," he replied. "But you don't, Ivy. I think you're beautiful without makeup." I blushed and thanked him. Suddenly the clouds moved away and the sun shined brightly. I appreciated the moments when I see just how handsome Mallory is. His green eyes twinkled and his skin brightened making him look golden. Hot.

That's your best friend you're talking about...

Then something caught my attention in the corner of my eye. Owen. He's walking towards me. I looked at him with a puzzled look. Why would he be walking towards me? "Um.. Hi?" I said to him, but it sounded like a question. He blinked, as if he was confused as to why he was here too. "Did you need something?" He rubbed the nape. "I just wanted to say 'hi'," he finally said. "Okay. Hi." Mallory squirmed awkwardly next me. "Well, um, bye," he said.

"Right. Bye."

He opened his mouth as if he was going to say something, but I guess he thought better of it because next thing I know he was walking away. I kept my eyes on Owen as he walked away. "Wow. What- did you feel that tension?" Mallory asked asked after a second. I nodded, but I kept thinking: Why would he want to talk to me?

By the time I walked into English class I felt like the day was never going to end.

The first two rows of seats were filled and I was freaking out. I made my way to a seat that looked as safe as possible.

Owen walked past me and it looked like he was going to sit next to me, but Emilie rushed in and led Owen far away from me. Slowly the class filled up. All but ONE seat was filled in my row and that seat was in my left. Where are Bella and Mallory? I barely finished the thought when a popular, Tyler, ran into the class room. He stared at the seat next to me. It was the closest seat to any of his friends. With great hesitance he sat down.
