I remember seeing her face, and nearly fainting. "Mary!!!!" I scream. "Oh my gosh! I can't believe your here!" I feel tears in my eyes.
I open my arms, expecting a hug. Instead, she rolls her eyes and gives me the cold shoulder.
"Mary? Mary! Don't you remember me?" Now the tears start to fall. "Look, J, I've moved on. My foster parent s are amazing, rich and loving. And you, I'd rather forget anything that reminds me of that..... that place."
Is this really happening? My bestfriend, the one who saved me. We were like sisters, how could she do this to me? Mrs. Alex, the librarian shushes me. "Sorry." I mumble. Mary walks out of the room. I now realize the reality of everything. Mary has moved on, it's time I do now.
But I can't! She helped me so much, it would be impossible to just throw her away. I wipe my tears off my face. Just then, Rachel runs in.
"Jenna? OH EM GEE! Gurl where were you at lunch?" I love her enthusiasm. "I..wasn't hungry." I hate lying to Rachel but I feel like a coward.
"Good thing you didn't come to lunch." She says quietly. "Why?" I reply. "Your the talk of the century. Some girl, Meredith? No. Um.. Maya? No. Oh yeah! Mary. Yes Mary, she's spreading awful rumors. People actually believed her to! It's bad." Rachel's usually bubbly personality has faded. "What a b--." I'm interrupted by Mrs. Alex. "Shhhhhhhhh!" She draws out the s.
"Ugh, I gotta head to class. Text me?" I ask Rachel. It sounded more like a question than a demand. I wasn't about to lose my only other friend.
"Sure!" Rachel replies, but the enthusiasm is fake- so is her smile.
Finally, school ends. I don't walk home anymore, you can guess,why, so I text my mom to pick my siblings and I up.
"School is awesome!" My sister Neala says. "Yeah! I have so many new friends!" My brother adds. "Shut up." I snap. I should be happy for them, but I'm not. In fact, I'm jealous. Just as Neala is about to make a comeback, my mom pulls into the school driveway. "Hello my darlings. How was school?" My mother asks in a sing-song voice.
She's beautiful, round blue eyes. Slightly red hair, which falls just below her shoulders. Her pale porcelain skinn, lightly sprinkled with freckles, embraces me. I decide not to tell her about Mary. She'd probably overreact, and I don't want that.
~~~~~At Home~~~~~
I run into my room, and quickly change into yoga shorts and a sweater. I pull my hair into a messy bun, and start my homework. It's about 4 o'clock when I'm done. Reaching for my phone, I hear a knock at the door. "Honey
it's me." My mom says. "Come on in." I stare blankly at my coral colored wall.
"I have great news!" She starts. "I don't like to remind you of the past, it's important to focus on the future. But, exceptions can be made." Her smile is ear to ear. "Remember Mary? She's joined your school! I am so happy, you'll be able to get close again! You'll have to get her phone number. We should invite them over to dinner. Maybe you two could go to the movies next week. Oh and we have to meet her foster parents of course!"
"Mom!" I'm getting frustrated. "Oh sorry honey." "I didn't see her today, maybe tommorow."
"Great! I'll start dinner." I hope Mary is just kidding. That this's is all a cruel joke. But I know it's not, and it never will be.
I'm having a hard time sleeping. My nightmares are slowly fading away, but it takes me hourse to fall asleep. Between Mary, school, and my dad, who is almost always away on buisness, it's overwhelming. At about 1 I'm the morning, my eyelids slowly start to droop. Next thing I know, my mom is shaking me. "Ughhhhh." I moan.
I take a quick shower, and apply concealer to my dark circles. I then put on lipgloss and mascara. My outfit of choice is a cute skater skirt, with my white converse. I straighten my hair, and take a big bite of my omelet. Another day of Hell. I walk through the doors and gasp.
