The summer flew by so quickly. The summer where Leslie Doyle fell madly in love with her mate Darrow Brogan. Some would call it teenage romance, but for their kind it was deeper than that. Their mate bond was strong..

At least that's what she thought.

"You comin'?" Leslie asked as she pulled on a shirt which she found on the floor. "I heard there's a barbecue after the boys' training."

Next to her a groggy seventeen year old named Darrow got up. He grinned and kissed the dark blonde before slipping on some pants.

They were in his room, like they always were since she shared a cabin with three other girls that exhanged for the summer with the Lycan pack. They were all there to become healers or medicine women. Leslie had been anticipating coming to the Lycan pack since she was eleven years old.

The best teacher of medicine resided there after all. Her name was Kinshra Brogan, Darrow's mother and Luna of his pack.

His father, Erik Brogan was the alpha. But rumour had it that the title was going to be passed on very soon.

"Well I might go there then," he said while pulling on his shoes. "Save me a seat?"

She chuckled while knowing all too well that he would sit with Liecia Lycan, a girl he seemed very keen on as well, and his family.

"I'll see you tonight," he says in her ear before kissing her one last time and opening the door to check if there were people in the hallway of the Alpha's residence.

He looked back at her and smiled. Before slipping out of the room, Darrow pulled her back, stealing one last kiss before whispering their goodbyes. She walked out with a small smile on her lips before sneaking back to her cabin.

There, Natasha, Hope and Basia, the girls she shared with, were all still sleeping soundly. The assignment of the day before probably took them a while.

She had finished it very quickly, with a bit of help though. They had all gotten symptoms and had to find out what's wrong with the wolf to prescribe a plan of treatment.

Hers was a overdose on wolfsbane which caused heartpoisoning.

The plan was to give him a blood transfusion until there was no poison left.

Darrow had helped her after he was done with training.

She couldn't wait 'till after the exchange when he promised he'd go public with her.

There would be no more sneaking around and she wouldn't have to see Liecia's longing looks at him anymore. He'd be finally hers to claim.

Flashes came back to her. After her last lesson and receiving the Luna's blessing to practise medicine, the bonfire party had started.

There was a barbecue, during which she sat with her roommates, and lots and lots of drinking. She remembered kissing and dancing with Darrow 'till midnight, sneaking back into her room because it was the closest and what could go wrong? They had done these things before.

She woke up with a headache and a warm arm draped around her waist.

Constant breaths were blown against her neck.

After she opened her eyes she saw Hope staring at her.

"You're lucky I decided to stay over at James'," she said with a small smile.

James was her fling, but the chance of them ever seeing each other after this summer was very small.

"Now get him out of our room." She winked with a knowing smile, most likely at Leslie's confused face and walked out with a small jump in her step.

Then Darrow stirred awake. He shot up, not knowing where he was.

When he saw his mate getting up and throwing on a morning robe he felt a little more calm.

The memories came back and he smiled.

He had so many plans.
Happy plans.
Plans with Leslie.
Their life together.

But they couldn't be and he knew.

"Lez, I need to use the shower and pack up soon 'cause I smell like sweat and the buses to get us home will be here soon," he heard a voice say. He thought it was the girl called Natasha, or maybe it was Melissa? He wasn't good at names. "So get loverboy out of there or I'm coming in."

He then knew he fucked up.

He jumped out of bed and quickly threw on his pants.

He couldn't be seen here, his parents would kill him if he stepped out of line and didn't follow the plan.

Leslie had a confused smile on her face.

"What are you doin-"

"Listen, it's been fun and everything. But I gotta go," he said while pulling his shirt over his head.

Her eyebrows frowned and a hurt look appeared in her eyes.

It broke him to see her like that. But he better rip the bandaid off quickly.

He kissed her head, for one last time.

Her warm skin touching his lips, for the one last time.

"You and me didn't happen," he nearly shouted in order for the words to make it out of his mouth.

"I'm sorry. But I have a job to fulfill and I can't use a mate right now."

He damn nearly flinched at his own words.

Tears shot up her eyes and his throat tightened. She swallowed her pain away, he could see the look in her eyes.

It was a pleading one.

A begging one.

He didn't know whether it was for him to stay or for him to set her free and verbally reject her. At this early stage that would be enough to break any bond.

Just three little words.

But he couldn't reject her. He just couldn't do it.

So he left without an other word.

Leaving a heavy silence in the air.

And he left her bleeding.
