Seventeen years old.....
I brushed my hair getting ready for school and Jeremy was sprawled out on my bed texting away.
"Ambs, what does PHAT mean?" Jeremy asked lazily. He couldn't ever memorize text IM which was annoying to me because he was constantly asking me what they mean. I sighed as I put my brush down and turned to him.
"Pretty hot and tempting." I answered him glumly with a roll of my eyes. His eyebrows shot up and his lips formed a smile as he said, "Oh yea" to himself.
"Ugh, you're disgusting. Please leave me out of your perverted talk with Faye." I got up, grabbed my bag, and left the room knowing he'd follow soon enough. We usually walked to school together so he was always here in the morning waiting for me to finish getting ready.
"Morning mom." I said cheerfully as I grabbed a pack of poptarts and stuck them in the toaster.
"Goodmorning sweetie. Don't forget I'll be home late tonight so go to Jeremy's for dinner okay. I have a late shift at the store." She reminded me as she grabbed her keys and purse.
"Okay mom, I know." She kissed my forehead and headed out saying bye to Jeremy as he entered the kitchen.
I sighed, mom was starting to work late more and more lately. Jeremy leaned on the door frame watching me and when I looked at him he shook his head.
"Maybe she's behind on bills or something." He said always making excuses for her.
I shrugged and grabbed our poptarts out of the toaster handing one to Jeremy as we headed out. The school was only a few blocks from our house so we got there in about ten minutes. As soon as we entered the school Jeremy's arm went around me and I rolled my eyes, but didn't say anything. No, Jeremy and I weren't a 'thing'. He just didn't want other guys knowing that because he didn't want me dating any of the 'idiots' that went to our school. Apparently no one here was good enough for me. So that's why he only dated girls that went to other schools because he didn't want anyone knowing that Jeremy and I weren't really dating, and he didn't want his girlfriend to get jealous of him always acting like he's my boyfriend. I didn't care either way. The boys here were blah anyway.
As we got to Jeremy's locker he threw his stuff in and got out his notebook and a pencil for class. Then his buddies crowded around us and started talking about what Briana James was wearing today and how far they could see up her skirt when she walked. It was absolutely disgusting.
Jeremy snorted and his arm went around my waist. "She's still got nothing on my girl."
They shook their heads and rolled their eyes. "Man Jeremy your blinded by love is all. I don't care what you say Briana James is HOT." One of them argued. We started walking to my locker and his friends followed behind checking out the other girls in the hall. This was a daily thing when I was around Jeremy. He tagged along with me like a loving and devoted boyfriend and his friends followed us around like his little minions. Jeremy stood by as I grabbed my stuff out of my locker and Angie yanked me away from Jeremy practically screaming in my ear in excitement.
"Oh my GOD! Amber, you have to get a look at the new guy!" I was suddenly pulled along and I heard Jeremy sigh audibly.
"Hello! Boyfriend! Remember?!" Jeremy hollered at Angie trying to remind her that I had a boyfriend and obviously didn't need to "get a look at the new guy". Too late though because I don't think Angie heard him as she was walking so fast.
"Geez Ang would you slow down?! I think I left my feet back there you're walking so fast." I complained.
"Well I wouldn't have to hurry if you didn't have a damn leash on you 24/7." She explained with a huff.
We stopped by the water fountains and she pointed him out across the hall.
"He is soo HOT!" Angie said completely exasperated.
He was with a lady that looked to be his mother and the principal. He didn't seem to be paying attention to whatever they were saying though as they talked probably about school policies and classes and such. Instead he was looking at his phone not seeming to care about anything going on around him. There was something about him that looked familiar though but I didn't get to see what it was because the bell rang and then Angie was telling me she'd see me in PE later. I took off too not wanting to be late for class.
"So did you like what you saw Ambs? Huh? Did you enjoy yourself? I hope you did because you know what? I didn't. I had to stand there and take all the torment the guys were giving me because MY GIRLFRIEND went off to ogle another guy."
"Oh shut up Jeremy, you're not really my boyfriend anyway. Get a grip."
"Yea but THEY don't know that. Remember?" Jeremy whispered as he looked around frantically to see if anyone heard.
I laughed at him and turned around in my seat as the teacher told everyone to get their books out. Then the door opened and the new guy walked in. I guess we have him in our class then I thought.
"Oh great! Don't tell me he's in our class. See Ambs you didn't have to leave me to go look, now you can look all you want." Jeremy whisper yelled at me. I ignored him and started doodling in my notebook. The teacher started announcing to the class that we had a new student and when she said his name I froze. Nathan Haynes. Nathan? It couldn't be, right?
"Fuck." I heard Jeremy mutter behind me and I knew he was thinking the same thing.
(A/N:::Picture on side is Nathan ------------->>>)
She told him to take a seat and my heart pounded with every step he took because I knew each step was bringing him closer to me. The only empty seat available was right next to me.
"Oh hell no." I heard Jeremy sigh and then I heard the seat next to me being taken.
"Miss Casey, I think Amber would like to switch seats with me." I heard Jeremy announce immediately drawing everyone's attention to me. I looked up at the teacher and saw her look of confusion.
"And would you like to tell me, Mr. Leary, exactly why you would like to switch seats with Ms. Dean?"
I giggled and Nathan looked at me with a small smirk that made me go completely red.
"Well, uh, she..." Jeremy sputtered at a loss for words.
"Thank you Mr. Leary, but I think the seat Amber has is fine." The teacher said with a slight smile as she held in her laughter. She knew how Jeremy was with guys around me. In fact, all the teachers knew. She got on with the lesson and Jeremy muttered behind me but I really couldn't hear him.
I was nervous. It's been a long time since I've talked to Nathan or seen him. I honestly haven't even gotten a good look at him yet. He must look different though because I didn't recognize him as instantly as I had before. I spared a glance his way and his gaze caught mine. He took in my features as I took in his and he smiled and looked away. Angie was right. He was HOT.
I wondered for a moment if he remembered me before turning my attention to the lesson. As soon as the bell rang I grabbed my stuff and stood at the same time as Nathan.
"Come on Ambs, I gotta go to my locker." Jeremy threw his arm around me quickly and pulled me out of class before Nathan and I could even acknowledge each other.
