Based on Marry Me by Thomas Rhett

She wants to get married, she wants it perfect
She wants her grandaddy preaching the service
Yeah, she wants magnolias out in the country
Not too many people, save her daddy some money

Sam Wilson was 8 years old when he first laid eyes on you. He and his parents had just moved next door to you and your family. Basket ball tucked under his arm, he shuffled down the footpath, the occasional slap of the ball against the concrete was one of the few sounds that echoed around the quiet neighbourhood. Sam looked around with boredom, he didn't like it here, but his mother assured him he would. That was when Sam first saw you. You were in your lounge room in front of the large window that took up most of the front of the house. You were dressed in a princess costume, tiara on your head, and your mother's heels, with all your toys lined up in rows as you twirled around like the couples did on TV. It was the beginning of a beautiful friendship, one that would last long into your high school years.

Ooh, she got it all planned out
Yeah, I can see it all right now

I'll wear my black suit, black tie, hide out in the back
I'll do a strong shot of whiskey straight out the flask
I'll try to make it through without crying so nobody sees
Yeah, she wanna get married
But she don't wanna marry me

Sam sat on the bench under the large lights of the school football field, amidst the roar of the crowds he heard your angelic voice call out his name, "Sam!" The boy in question turned around and saw you standing at the rails, bouncing with excitement as you spun around in your homemade tie-dye shirt with his name in large black letters on the back. Sam laughed and shook his head, as your bright (e/c) eyes shone in the glow of the lights. You had a smile that lit up the world, and Sam was falling for you, hard.

I remember the night when I almost kissed her
Yeah, I kinda freaked out, we'd been friends for forever
And I always wondered if she felt the same way
When I got the invite, I knew it was too late
And I know her daddy's been dreading this day
Oh, but he don't know he ain't the only one giving her away

At the end of the football game, Sam piggybacked you out of the stadium as your laughter filled the air. A melody that he would never grow tired of. You wander to a diner not far from the school where the other players and a bunch of your class mates were celebrating the victory. The two of you slid into a booth side by side as another of your friend's sat opposite you. Lost in conversation, Sam didn't notice you place your hand on the seat in the space between you. You would glance at him out of the corner of your eye every now and then, watching him talk as you admired how handsome he'd grown since you guys first met. Your heart fluttered as you saw Sam's hand slip from his lap and next to yours. When your friend got up and walked away, you and Sam hardly noticed as you stared into each other's eyes. In a bold move, you place your hand on top of his as a faint blush spread from your cheeks to your ears. Sam swallowed as he slowly leaned in, giving you every chances to back out. But you had no intentions of as you mirrored his movements. Your lips where inches apart when you both jumped apart at the sound of Todd, a line backer and good friend of you both, smacked the window outside scaring you both. You gave Sam a weak smile before you ran outside to get Todd back. Sam watched you sadly, wondering if he'd ever get another chance to kiss you again.

He never did.

I'll wear my black suit, black tie, hide out in the back
I'll do a strong shot of whiskey straight out the flask
I'll try to make it through without crying so nobody sees
Yeah, she wanna get married
But she don't wanna marry me

After graduation, you'd both gone your separate ways, but tried your hardest to stay in contact. A phone call here and there, a few texts now and again, but once Sam had been deployed, the two of you'd virtually lost all contact. Sam had joined the Avengers by the time you saw him again, you'd been in the city and happened to run into him by pure chance. It was just like old times as you spent hours catching up and reminiscing. Just when Sam thought he might get the chance to have more than friendship with you, he discovered you were seeing someone and it was serious. Sam forced a smile through the rest of the conversation, all the while feeling like he'd been punched in the gut. The invite came a month later.

Bet she got on her dress now, welcoming the guests now
I could try to find her, get it off of my chest now
But I ain't gonna mess it up, so I'll wish her the best now
So I'm in my black suit, black tie, hiding out in the back
Doing a strong shot of whiskey straight out the flask
I'll try to make it through without crying so nobody sees

Sam smoothed out his black suit, patting his pocket where the full flask was sitting practically calling his name. He walked into your wedding and felt sick to his stomach, everything looked just how you had talked about when you were kids. Sam stopped at the table where people were placing cards and gifts for the happy couple. He looked down at the gift in his hand, wrapped in the shirt you wore at the football game all those years ago. Sam placed it on the table next to a picture of you when you were a little girl. He thought he could do this, he thought he could sit back and watch you marry another man, but he couldn't. He pulled at his tie and ran from the wedding. He kicked himself for never having the guts to tell you how he felt, and now he'd missed his chance. Sam stumbled into the diner, and sat down in the same booth you guys had. The waitress brought his coffee, but he opted for the flask in his jacket instead.

You stood next to your father at one end of the isle, the man you loved and soon to be husband at the other end. As you walked towards him, his face changed and for a second you could have sworn you saw Sam in his place. You glanced subtly around for the dark-skinned man, but you couldn't see him. You stood shakily opposite your fiance and for the first time, you were starting to doubt yourself. He looked at you with a loving and encouraging smile as he said 'I do'.

"Y/N?" Your grandfather looked at you concerned, as everyone waited for you to say the two little words that would change your life.

"I-"

Sam swallowed another mouthful of the unforgiving whiskey as he wondered how things might have been if he'd kissed you that night. He looked out the window and couldn't believe his eyes, there you were in your white dress and tears in your eyes. You threw your hands up in the air as you choked out a sob. Sam stood up as you placed your left hand over your mouth, with no ring in sight.

Yeah, she wanna get married
Yeah, she gonna get married
But she ain't gonna marry me
Whoa, she ain't gonna marry me, no
