Cold.
The first thing I remember is cold. Ice and snow fell around me, making it impossible for me to have seen anything. I called out for someone. Anyone. Nobody came. I trudged through the snow as long as my little legs could take me. It was night, and everything was dark except the distant fires from my village. My father woke me up in the middle of the night and hid me away in a woven basket in the woods when the invaders came.
"You be a good girl, Kali. I love you. See you soon," He told me. That was the last I saw of him.
After hours of walking, I collapse near a tree. Next thing I know, I am surrounded by strange looking creatures, wearing white suits and masks. They were pointing and staring at me, conversing among themselves in a language unlike my own. One of them finally eases their way closer to me. I'm too tired to move. The creature holds their hands up and slowly pulls off their mask to show a beautiful face. None like anything I had ever seen before. Its skin was dark brown with curly black hair. Its eyes sparkle in the light from fires and strange torches the creatures have on them. It smiles at me, and I immediately trust it.
"Hello, sweetie," The stranger said.
"Dyshun," I whispered in my native tongue. "Toyog traix amiebach,"
The creature looked behind to one of its companions, whispered something under its breath, and looked back at me with another smile.
"My name," It pointed to itself. "Jenny,"
I frowned at the creature, not understanding. I believed she wanted to tell me something, I just didn't understand what.
"Me," It pointed to itself again. "Jenny." It turns around and points to the three other creatures behind her. "Mike, John, Hannah."
Something clicked in my brain. I looked at the dark skinned one in front of me. I pointed to it. "Jenny," I mimic.
"Yes, Jenny." The creature smiles and points at me. "Who are you?"
I point to myself. "Kali." I point to her. "Jenny." It took all the energy I had to utter words. I slumped back against the tree, half asleep.
"Kali." The creature echoed. "Nice to meet you, Kali." The creature slowly inched closer to me. I close my eyes, fully trusting in this 'Jenny'. I could feel 'Jenny' lift me up, shielding me from the intense snow and ice.
"I'm going to take care of you, Kali. Don't worry, you're safe now."
