1st Person Perspective
Gender neutralYou had just woken up from a nightmare, you sat up too fast giving you a headache. The digital clock on the bedside table was the only source of light that illuminated your room and it read 3:00 a.m. You did your best to calm your breathing. For a moment you remained on the bed, sitting there for almost half an hour. The silence was disturbed by the buzzing noise of your phone.
It was a text from your parents, you knew.
And they knew that you'd reply when you're awake.
But they didn't have to know that you're awake right now. It'd give away that you were having nightmares again, and they'd talk you in to go to a new psychologist and/or a psychiatrist who specializes in sleep paralysis. They'll make you drink pills, keep a journal to record your sleep and dreams, make you follow a strict schedule meet your psychologist just to discuss your other issues. Triggers too.
Thinking about it now just gave you another headache.
"I can't take this." You stood up, changed into a dry shirt. The phone buzzed again. This time you knew it was one of your friends from back home, but you chose to ignore it as well to head to the gym.
"Good morning, agent (y/n). Isn't it a bit too early to train?" FRIDAY, asks as you jogged to the punching bags.
"It is. I just felt the need to energize." There was no need for boxing gloves, your skin is strong. Nothing could put a scratch on it.
"Isn't it better to energize by sleeping than to exert whatever's left of your energy through exercising?" FRIDAY asks. Wow. The AI was showing concern for your health then again it may be because you were an important asset to the Avengers.
"No use, even if I did sleep I'd just wake up more tired than I already was before." You landed hit after hit as you spoke each word.
"Same here." You stopped abruptly, recognizing the voice. "Why didn't you tell me?" He asks.
"What?"
"You know 'what'." He sasses. "You have sleep paralysis and a bipolar disorder." He states walking towards you. "And you've been under medication for almost three years. You could've told me, I could have helped you earlier." His eyes were shining under the light, clearly upset of what he had just realized. His posture did not carry the swag he always had everywhere and his voice sounded so much softer.
"I'm sorry." You apologize.
"Why didn't you mention it before." It was better to be honest in this kind of situation than to lie and regret it later.
"Because I saw no reason to bring it up. I suppose I thought that I was strong enough but I guess I was wrong. Despite my unbreakable and indestructible physique, I find myself breaking inside. More so as each day passes." Your eyes did not waver from the elder's gaze, you refused to break in front of him. He was broken as well. Honesty has always been your strong suite. It didn't matter how weak you look in front of anyone. It didn't matter if it was too personal. You didn't care that much for image. Unlike some, you spoke the truth. Needed or not.
"If I noticed earlier then I would've been able to help you, I could have been able to fix you like you did me." Tony mutters, his head lowered. He tilts and curses, to noone in particular. You had been good to him. Always present when he needed a shoulder to cry on, someone to laugh with, share his problems with, and even connect with. You're his friend and he trusted no one else like he trusted you.
"If you noticed earlier then I wouldn't have been as good of a spy as I my file claims me to be." You comment pulling Tony to you. "It's okay, Tony." Holding him close to you, he did the same only tighter. You reciprocated.
"Even if he did, you're still the best to us."
"We won't let anything damage your name, so don't you worry too much about it." Clint and Natasha stood by the entrance of the gym. Did Tony just wake them up?
"And no, Tony did not wake us up. Bruce accidentally set the alarm too early so I woke up because of it." Natasha rolled her eyes, an annoyed smile perking on her lips. Cute how she denies her interest in the doctor when it's so obvious.
"Sorry." Another voice muttered right behind Clint.
"Good morning." A small smile graces your lips as you saw Cap follow behind them. He had just gotten back from his run and you notice that he too had a worried look. Tony was still in your arms holding you tighter than anyone else had before. Not even your parents had you this tight nor your friends who always seemed to hesitate to show their affection towards you in fear of driving you away. And it made you feel warm. Something you realize you've never felt before and never thought would feel. You never even experienced this with your own family. Something wet was on your cheek and you realize that it was a tear. Your tear.
You were confused even more when your sight got fuzzy. Then even more tears fell as you as you stared at the man in your arms. The person you cared for since the first time you met, and the man you enjoyed caring for. For some strange reason you felt yourself consumed with the warmth you felt. And your heartbeat went faster. You were still confused as you felt this.
"We love you, (y/n)." Clint says as the rest of the group walks up to us and joins the embrace. 'Love.' A weird word and a confusing emotion to feel.
"Love." You mutter under your breath still feeling the warmth. You wanted to feel frightened, worried even. Were you having a fever or was it just normal under this circumstance?
"It's only confusing at first but I'm sure you'll get the hang of it." Natasha assures you as feel her hold you from the side. You hummed enjoying the warmth around you.
If this is what feels to love and be loved then I wish that I could always feel it.
In the gym, you let your tears flow and the strange warmth consume you. It felt comfortable. The Avengers - no your friends - held you.
You were there for them when they needed help. They were there now that you needed help. Realizing what has been said and confessed to you, you reply honestly. With words you knew and could act on.
"I'll always be with all of you, every step of the way." With just that, everyone smiled.
