"Hey Rhett. So, have you thought of who you're going to ask to the homecoming dance?" Bethany had asked me as I rushed to my locker. She twirled her dark mocha brown hair around her finger as she batted her clearly fake eyelashes at me. To this day, I still remember how she seemed to care too much about the popularity and her status amongst the sea of hormonal teenagers."Homecoming? Hmm...no, I haven't actually." I brushed past her, hoping she would've gotten the hint. The hint that I didn't want to go with her. Heck, at this point I had no clue who I really wanted to take. About a couple months prior, I had broken up with Aria, so I wasn't really looking for anything at the moment. My goal was to graduate and get the heck away. My mind did briefly linger to Noa when I had thought of the homecoming dance, which would be my last one, but I had pushed the thought aside as I knew she would never say yes.
"Really? Well, you know I don't have a date yet and-"
"Hey, Becky, why don't you buzz off and go annoy another guy?" I heard a familiar feminine voice say behind me. I turned around to see Noa standing there, crossing her arms while looking down at Bethany. Noa had at least several inches on the petite cheerleader.
Bethany glared at her, sticking her nose up more, as if it weren't already high enough before. "Why don't you mind your own business, 'Nobody Noa', and by the way, my name is Bethany not Becky!" Noa didn't back down unlike most girls would have; she seemed to stand her ground darkening her gaze at Bethany.
"Ugh just leave already. This nobody doesn't care what the hell your name is. Scram!" Noa shooed her away as if Bethany were an annoying fly or pesky bee. I had just stood there dumbfounded, not knowing what to say and if I really should say anything.
"Bitch!" Bethany spatted in her face before turning towards me, changing her expression to a soft smile. "If you don't have a date...let me know, Rhett-babe." She gave me a flirtatious wave as I shifted my gaze back to the girl that saved my behind.
Noa.
"God. I hate her. More than I hate social interactions, and I really hate those." She clutched her books close to her chest as she rolled her eyes, huffing in annoyance.
To this day, I can remember exactly what she had on because it was the first time I actually saw her in a dress that wasn't black or full of holes. It was a lighter denim dress that had a studded belt around the middle. She still wore her black combat boots with it, giving it an edgier feel, but it suited her.
"Thanks..." I had mumbled as she began to walk away. She halted and turned around to face me.
Her mouth formed into a half smile.
"Now, you owe this bitch, Rhett-babe." I blushed as she repeated the 'nickname' that Bethany had called me moments before. Although, it didn't affect me when Bethany had said it, somehow when Noa said it, my insides burned; erupting feelings of desire within me.
I followed after her, feeling a strange thing as I trailed behind her.
Sensing my presence, she had said after getting a few feet down the hallway, "Wow, you really can't get enough of me...can you, babe?" Babe.
I knew at the time she meant it sarcastically, but it still had an effect on me.
"Babe? Hm, I'm liking the sound of that," I had said a bit flirtatiously. She looked over at me, quirking an eyebrow but brushing it off as we headed into class.
We both had taken our seats, and before the bell rang, I had looked at her from across the room, watching her arrange her desk neatly.
She glanced up at me, with a look of confusion. I winked at her, and she responded with her typical eye roll before a very foreign but beautiful smile arose on her features.
It was the first smile of hers that was directed towards me.
And it wasn't the last one.
