It was in the cloudy morning when the Flutter Friends, excluding Emily, saw Jared again after three years. Mornings were a time for drama, most certainly. The girls, however, had been prepped for this the moment they met Emily at the traffic lights.
The traffic lights were the designated area that the Flutter Friends would meet so they could begin their walk to school. The traffic lights had been their meeting post since the first year they begun St. Ignus. All first years had a designated area with their friends to meet and walk to school with and by the second year they would've either ditched those friends or formed smaller groups to walk with. It was their last year at St. Ignus and they had maintained both their friendships and the traffic lights. The addition of Emily was like a great book gaining a great cover, initially unneeded yet it made it so much better.
Emily had told them how Jared wanted to confront Mia and 'clear the air' with her and maybe have a possible friendship with her again and how he liked hanging out with the Charming Lads (or the cringe boys as Emily called them) and that he wouldn't stop asking questions about her and go on and on about how much he missed her yet she never spoke of why he never stayed in contact with her.
"It's not my place," she would say, "this is between you two in the end."
There was something in the way she said it that had made Rosetta think twice about her. The inability to read her mind made Rosetta's teeth clench slightly. She was still unsure whether Emily was a human or not and didn't want to take the risk of asking her without the other's consent. So as the Flutter Friend's minds buzzed with expectation as they approached their bench where Jared and the Charming Lads sat, Rosetta felt the constant void of Emily's thoughts.
When they had reached the boys, the Charming lads had, obviously, left their seats and presented them to the girls. They had graciously taken them and smiled at their respective potential partner. The next moment, the Flutter Friend's heads turned to Jared and gave him a deadpan look. In sync, they said, "Welcome back, Jared Destiny."
This had terrified and confused the boys and Jared even flinched slightly. Rosetta immediately tried to tap into his mind, to figure out what he was thinking, but it was blank like Emily's. It was her turn to be confused. This couldn't just be blood related, Emily and Jared weren't related biologically but it couldn't just be a coincidence that she couldn't read either of their minds.
"Mia, could we talk in private?" Jared asked. Mia nodded and begun to get up from her spot when Rosetta grabbed her sleeve. Mia looked at her curiously but Rosetta just let go and apologised quickly. So Mia and Jared walked off together but Mia looked kept glancing back on Rosetta.
The Flutter Friends recognised that something was right so they quickly thought of a tactic to scare off the boys.
"You guys will not believe how heavily I bled yesterday," Annabelle begun, "I had to get up like three times during the night just change my pad-"
And the Charming Lads had scattered off like rats.
"What's wrong, Rosetta?" Fiona asked as soon as they were gone.
Rosetta was about to dismiss it and say they would talk about when Emily wasn't there but- but she just had to know.
"What are you, Emily?" It was more of a demand than a question. The other girls looked shocked Rosetta, this wasn't just a random question she had asked, and this was something that puts their secret at risk. Emily? She looked at Rosetta, shocked initially but her face had a moment of realisation.
"You're not just a fairy are you?" It was clearly not a question and the girls just stared at Emily flabbergasted. Who was she? "I'm a Keeper."
