Prologue
Everyone has a soulmate, this is my story of how I found mine.
It was the year 2146 I was 16 years old and it was December, nearly winter break in hell. Otherwise known as school.
Over the years humans have evolved in more bad ways than good. Let me explain. Each of us are born with a tattoo inked into the back of our necks. This tattoo meant everything in my time. Your tattoo told you who you'd be with for the rest of your life. Everyone's is different and if someone has the same tattoo you were meant to be. Anyone who went against this was looked down upon.
Some were lucky to find their soul mate at a young age others not so much. I thought finding someone with the same marking was everything, until that day.
"I need this paper back by Monday everyone." I tried to drown her out with my headphones as Ms.Jamison continued to talk although the bell had already rang.
"Rhiannon are you even listening?" Everyone stared at me and in the moment I couldn't understand why.
"Are you deaf trailer trash?!" They all laughed as Trevor Williams (for the 7th time today) made me look horrible. Not that I cared, I'm used to the embarrassment.
"Yeah Ms. J, turn in the assignment on Monday I got it." I finally said as I looked away losing my patience for her to let us out of class.
When she actually did I was the first one out, but of course someone had to knock my books out of my hand on my way to my bike. Typical.
"Mom I need you to calm down I'm on my way okay." She always checks up on me as soon as it hits 4 o'clock.
"I'm riding up right now okay," I wasn't lying I was literally in the drive way of our trailer park. When I opened the first gate I greeted our neighbors walking my bike to the rack, and jogged over to our trailer.
"Rhiannon?" I heard my mom faintly call from her room.
"Yeah mom I'm coming."
"It's your night to cook." She called back
"Yeah yeah yeah I know."
My mom and I have been living here since I can remember. We'd be living in the city with everyone else if my mom would've ever met her hook (our word for soul mate). Well, she did find him but that was when she worked in the city morgue, and make a guess... He was the body she was inspecting. He died in a gun fight apparently.
You may be asking "Then who's your father Rhiannon?" Well that I don't even know the answer to. My mom refuses to tell me until I'm "of age" what ever that means.
I looked throught the fridge trying to find something to cook but all we had was Aunt Jemimas maple syrup, an apple, sliced ham, and one boiled egg.
"What the hell am I supposed to do with this?" I thought to myself.
"Mom!" I yelled as my voice echoed to the back.
"What? What? What?" She came running into the kitchen, " Are you okay?"
"Yeah mom stop being so paranoid I just wanted to tell you I have to go to the store to get something to cook. You got twenty bucks I can borrow?"
"Rhiannon you know how I feel about you leaving at this hour."
"Mom. It's only four thirty." I said as I rolled my eyes with out even realizing it.
" Well I'm not too fond of you having to pass by snob city on the way even if it's around the corner." Smugly, she said crossing her arms.
"I've been dealing with these people since I could remember, I can handle myself." When is this argument going to end and she just lets me go?
"Okay I'm going with you then." she said as she grabbed her keys.
"No no no. Not this time." I grabbed the keys and made a brake for the door. I could see her coming out behind me.
"Oh god just be safe hun!" She yelled after me and I nodded my head back in assurance.
As I passed out front gate I stopped at our town sign before passing by the gate that goes to "Rich people central" as my mom and I call it.
I looked at our town sign, slightly broken and the red paint chipping. "Hook-less". Every time I read this sign I shiver a little bit. I can't live here forever, once I find my hook we'll do... whatever hooks do.
I started peddling past the gate trying to move as fast as I could. I didn't want any one seeing me. I don't necessarily have the time for it.
"Rhiannon?" Shit. Please don't be any one from school. I stopped my bike my feet slowly skitting the ground making the most awful sound and I turned around to be greeted by a familiar face.
"Oh, it's you Daniel." I said giving him a glare that he could probably feel through his entire body.
"How have you been?" He shrugged his shoulders. Is he really asking me that question?
Daniel and I used to date in freshman year.We lived in the same gate and everything. We knew what we were doing wasn't right considering we weren't hooks but I was crushing what can I say?
"Shouldn't I be asking you that question Danny?" He slightly put his head down, " Hows your mom and her hook? What's was his name? Oh that's right 'money bags'?"
" Look Rhiannon I'm sorry. Okay. I can't help who my moms hook is."
"That's what you think I'm upset about?!" I caught myself before beginning to yell. " I don't care about your mom or whatever I care that you dumped me just because you were rich and moved to a new gate." I pressed my tongue ring against my two front teeth in frustration.
"I didn't dump you! You dumped-" he paused as an old couple passed and he lowered his voice, " You dumped me, Rhiannon and you keep claiming you were beating me to the punch but I-" he was interrupted by my cell ringing.
"Yeah mom sorry there was some trash in my way I had to take care of it really quick." I turned my bike around and kept peddling.
"I'm almost at the store I'll call you when I get back to our gate. Okay bye."
As I walked in I asked almost immediately where the produce section was. I was craving meat.
As I looked through the choices I couldn't even understand the names of half of these meats. What happened to pork, chicken, and etcetera? Before I knew it I had a lot of different things on my basket. I didn't really know what was what.
"Looks like you really like eating meat? Or are you having a barbecue?" A deep voice spoke from behind me.
I pushed my dark brown hair back and started to giggle, "That's what she sa-" my immature joke was cut off by him grabbing my throat. I jumped as I turned to be met with the most gorgeous face Id ever seen. With my hand still on the back of my head from flipping my hair.
Without even asking my okay he pulled me to the back of the store. I wanted to pull away but I was some how frozen and I couldn't understand why.
"Who are you and why do you have my grand fathers marking." his face more serious than I'd ever seen someone's before•
