We're the only ones left.
The only ones left in this "bureau" of his and I-I don't even want to believe it. As soon as I thought I was apart of something. As soon as I thought I had a place, I'm right back to isolation.
"I thought I was alone until I saw your mark." he smiled at me but I didn't smile back. I want to go home. I want this nightmare to end and go back to living my normal life. I never thought I'd say it but being trailer trash doesn't look so bad right now.
"I don't want to scare you off but,"
"How could you possibly scare me now." I interrupted him, "I'm going to be hookless for life, I'll live my life poor like my mom, and I'll never have a home to call my own. So tell me, Logan what can possibly scare me now?"
"Well I guess I lied. Technically I'm your hook," my eyes widened as he spoke, "Well we have the same marking. Everyone in our bureau does; that's what makes us so special. See it was a defect in the system that happened right after my grandfather was born. There were hundreds of duplicates of one marking and we all stuck together. But, of course we weren't accepted throughout society. We were, hunted and forced into hiding." he hung his head as if he was revisiting it.
"Just last year there were about 50 of us, and one day," his voice broke "they um found our hiding place and wiped out half of us in one hour. I'd never been so terrified."
"And the survivors?" I asked starting to feel bad for testing him before.
"Well that one's my fault, but," he wiped a tear before it could reach his cheek, "I don't want to get into it right now." he faked a smile and ambled towards the door.
"I'll go make breakfast." I nodded my head slowly in agreement.
I watched as he slipped through the door obviously shaken by the conversation we just had.
When I think about it, he's just like me he's all alone. He had no one before he saw me, he just wanted someone like I did. I just wish he didn't have to kidnap me to tell me this, he should've took me out to dinner first.
I needed this food. He brought me pancakes and the most perfectly crisp bacon I'd ever tried. I couldn't process all this on an empty stomach.
"So," I said with a full mouth of food. hey, who ever said I was lady like? "What do you do all day here?"
"I usually work on developing my powers." I've only heard about people with powers in folk tales. I knew there used to be a time where everyone had them but my mom told me that's long gone. The only way to have powers is if both of your parents had them, and their parents, and their parents, and etcetera. Logan's definitely special I guess you could say.
"Can you show me what you've been working on?" I said before biting into another piece of bacon.
"Uh, I'm a little rusty okay so don't judge."
"I've never met a pure bred in my life I'm pretty sure I'd be amazed if you could pull a rabbit out of a hat." he laughed, showing those gorgeous teeth of his.
"Okay okay I'll show you." he looked at me in extreme focus as I stared directly back in confusion.
"Why are you-"
"shhhh," he cut me off "I need focus." I started to feel uncomfortable the more he stared what was he going to do?
Slowly, the uncomfortable feeling turned into feeling limp. I could still control my body but I started feeling lighter and lighter. Then small hairs on my head started standing up. Have you ever rubbed your head with a balloon and it got static-like? That's exactly what my head looked like.
I gasped when I felt my body slowly be lifted off of the end of the bed. Before I knew it I was on the ceiling. My knee was slightly touching the ceiling light. I felt excited and scared at the same time. As fast as I rose I went right back down.
"Th-that was amazing!" I was freaking out I couldn't even eat my pancakes.
"How long have you been able to do that?!"
"Well my powers are inherited, as you know, but it does take practice to develope them fully."
"Damn I wish I could fly or something like that I'd never have to ride my bike home again." Home.
"I really need to get back Logan. My moms probably having a heart attack. Could you take me?" His smile faded and went back to the plain look he had when I met him.
"Alright. I figured you couldn't stay here forever." he grabbed his keys, "Meet me out front."
I laced up my high tops with out even putting on socks and I jogged over to the stairs.
"Woah." his house was amazing. I wanted to explore it for a little but I knew I had to get home. So I bounced down the spiral staircase that led into the main hall. The floor was stained wood and each door down the hall was lined with gold, built of white stone and topped off with a gold handle. At the end of the hall was the front driveway which was just as beautiful as the house itself.
There was a garden and patio surrounding the rounded drive way. There were statues and fountains and more flowers than I'd ever seen. I looked down at Logan, sitting in a different car than before looking up at me then back at his phone.
I walked over to the car making sure to continue looking around me as I did so.
"This place is amazing."
"I guess. It's not so great when you have to live in such a big house alone." he looked over at me and our eyes met for two seconds. I, almost instantly, looked away trying not to delay him any longer.
He started up the engine and backed out quickly. I looked out the side mirror as I watched the gorgeous house fade away in the distance, wishing I'd lived there with my mom instead of our trailer park.
The ride there was silent. The kind of silence that makes your ears ring. He told me before, its only a 30 minute drive but it felt like forever considering neither of us said a word. I decided to break the silence.
"Are we hanging out again?" I turned my head towards him.
"Well I mean we're 'hooks'" he chuckled, "I have to see you again we're 'soul mates'" he winked at me this time. I couldn't help but smile.
"So when will that be?"
"I'll pick you up tomorrow. You're on winter break, right?" 'Perfect timing' I thought to myself (more like ourselves)
Before I could agree we'd made it back to my park. I didn't even question how he knew my address.
I opened the car door and managed to get out of the elevated truck okay.
"I'll be here tomorrow at one. Be ready." and just like that he left as soon as he came. I'm already ready.
.
I tried to sneak into the door as quietly as possible, but just my luck, she was right in the kitchen.
"Where have you been! I've been worried sick, I called you but no answer, I texted you, no answer, I even emailed you Rhiannon. What in the hell could be your excuse?" I wanted to tell her everything right then. I wanted tell her about Logan and how he's a pure bred and the bureau. Everything! But I already knew I couldn't.
"I got caught up with some kids from school." I couldn't look her in the eyes as I lied right through my teeth.
"What? Are you okay? What did they do to you." she placed her hands on my shoulders and started to inspect me as she spoke.
"Mom I'm fine." I pushed her off of me and bolted for my room. I shut and locked the door behind me.
I slid down the door, finally relieved. I needed to clear my head.
.
The next morning I was woken up by the sound of whispers outside my door.
"Mom?" It sounded like more than one voice.
"Mom! Is that you?." The whispering stopped. My eyes widened. I know that's not my mom.
"Come on." I heard a voice speak from my window. It was Logan.
I didn't hesitate one bit to go with him, although I was worried about my mother.
I climbed out the window with ease.
"What's going on?" The first thing that came out of my mouth.
"They found you."
