The idea came to me one night when I was playing Fallout 3 of all things! I've always had a soft spot for Nick Valentine. I promise it isn't a sappy love story, but there is a hint of it here and there. The title of this part is the beginning lyrics to the song from Fallout New Vegas. It happens to be Charlize's favorite song that she listens to in Home Plate.
This is my dear, Charlize, or as close as I could find. And yes, I did use a picture of Patrick Stewart as a human!Nick Valentine. Get over it because I find him to be remarkably how I pictured Nick as a human. If he doesn't suit your fancy, think of him mixed with Oscar Isaac. You can't go wrong with Oscar Isaac.
Anyway, I hope you enjoy. This was a ton of fun to write! Sorry if Nick Valentine seems out of character. I've never written him before. If you see any grammar mistakes, let me know.
**********
Nick Valentine is many things. He is a detective, a friend, and a damn good lie detector. But of the many things he is considered, a well-respected person, he is not. It just so happens that the town he lives in, Diamond City, is not very welcoming to synths. Maybe if he looked like a human, people would treat him better... But Nick is also very good at hiding his true feelings, considering he doesn't have the capabilities to form his face into all sorts of emotions.
Nick scours the Commonwealth, and sometimes further, to find long-lost loved-ones no one believes can be found, just out of the kindness of his heart, because he is a nice guy. In doing so, he risks his life and his irreplaceable body parts just so that, maybe, the world won't seem so bad. But no one seems to remember those moments of true humanity when they call him a 'freak', an 'Institute spy', and sometimes, 'mindless machine'. And they call themselves human.
Nick doesn't dwell on any of these things when he has more important things to do, like find missing persons, but every once in a while, when some asshole has to ruin a good day, Ellie or that 'vault dweller' find him wallowing in self-pity with cigarette ashes dusting all over his patchwork trench coat. Cigarettes really don't affect Nick at all like nicotine does with humans, his being a synthetic human and all, but the habit from his borrowed memories is all too comforting.
