Kaneki was working her usual shift at Antieku when the bell finally rang after half a shift of nothing but silence. She looks up to greet the customers when Touka rushes over to them. Judging from the way she's talking to them Kaneki can only assume that they all know one another.

Kaneki pulls at her hair nervously feeling a stab of self loathing. I mean, they seem pretty close and the only one Kaneki was like that with doesn't even know what Genus Kaneki is anymore. Touka makes it a point to introduce the two of them, Miss Ryoko and Himami. They had to flee their home for safety reasons, Miss Ryoko's husband is a doctor and they haven't heard from him in awhile.

Hinami is distraught about leaving her father, she feels like her mother and herself have abandoned him. Kaneki saw the turmoil in her eyes and offered her a kind smile.

Hinami and Miss Ryoko went upstairs to talk to Yoshimura. Kaneki finished her shift and thought she'd bring Hinami a nice cup of coffee. Upon opening the door she saw Hinami mid bite of what her nose told her was human meat. She gasped softly dropping the coffee cup and ran to her room locking herself in there.

After a few hours of calming herself down Kaneki once again brought Hinami a cup of coffee, this time she knocked. Hinami was nose deep in Kaneki's favorite Sen Takatsuki book. "Oh wow you like Takatsuki too?" Hinami looked up at Kaneki smiling nervously. "Actually I'm using it to learn how to read." She goes to scribble something in an open notebook.

Kaneki sets the coffee on the table and begins helping Hinami with her reading. Unbeknownst to the pair Touka is silently watching from the hallway, thankful that Kaneki didn't upset Hinami again.

After helping Hinami with her reading, Kaneki noticed the funny look on her face. "Is something wrong?" She pauses and looked up at the dark haired ghoul. "Earlier, when you saw me eating you looked afraid and disgusted by me. You're a ghoul too aren't you? Why did you act that way?" Hinami's childlike innocence make Kaneki's heart clench. "I am different, Hinami.. But I shouldn't have reacted that way towards you I am very sorry." Shrugging off what she said Hinami just smiled and hugged her. "Thank you Onee-Chan! I'm very excited to learn to read from you."

The next day Hinami and Miss Ryoko get into an argument about Asaki (Hinami's Dad). "I want to see Daddy let me go see him!" Sighing softly Ryoko explained to her daughter about how they couldn't go see her husband because it wasn't safe.

Sighing under her breath Ryoko recalls a Touka mentioning Kaneki teaching her daughter to read. "I tell you what, Hinami why don't we go and get you a new book! What do you say?" Hinami eagerly agreed and off they went to the local book store.  Hinami got two new Sen Takatsuki books. Merrily skipping hand in hand with her mother she couldn't help but hum happily.

On the way back to Anteiku it began to rain, Ryoko pulled out her umbrella and when looking towards their backs noticed two Doves tailing them. Fear gripped her heart and she glanced at her unsuspecting daughter. She picked up their pace and turned down an alley trying to shake the investigators.

Unfortunately at the end of the alley stood two Doves in front with many to back them up. They were surrounded with no hopes of
escape. The short crazed looking Dove released his quinque and immediately Ryoko and Hinami recognized it. "D-daddy..?" Gasping softly Ryoko quickly wrapped herself and Hinami with her kagune.

The world around them was silent and Hinami watched her mother with a look of horror etched into her features. "M-mama.. what are we going to do? They'll kill us, just like they did to Daddy.." Her heart painfully clenched as she listened to her daughter's voice quiver at this statement.

"Listen to me, baby. I'm going to hold them off, I will protect you no matter what. I need you to run, run as fast as you can to Anteiku. Don't stop for anything and just.. remember your Daddy and I love you so very much." Slowly uncoiling her kagune Ryoko knocks back the Doves blocking Hinami's escape. She shoves her daughter and immediately begins fighting off the Doves.

"You stupid creature! You cannot hold your own against us all. Give up, just like your precious husband did." A wicked grin crossed his face and her anger amplified her attacks.

Out of nowhere a ghoul investigator pierces her from behind through her chest. She looks at it in horror realizing her daughter would be an orphan. She glared at the Doves before her and blindly attacked with all the strength she had left.

Hinami ran as fast as her legs would carry her. Tripping and stumbling she ran smack dab into Kaneki. Hurriedly she recounts the happenings of the alleyway to her and they take off back into the direction Hinami came from, against Kaneki's better judgement.

She peaks into the alley seeing a handsome investigator glancing their way. Along with a small man dragging Ryoko's limp body out of the alley. Kaneki leans back against the brick wall holding Hinami close so she didn't have to see the carnage of it all. She picked her up and quickly ran back to Anteiku.

-A/N; The battle between Mado and Touka is coming soon! Along with Kaneki's initial encounter with Amon 😍 I really hate to keep Ryoko's death but it helps Segway into the fights to come.
